When O was hired, who were the other "hot names"?

Once Herman ship had sailed, what were the other reasonable names to consider? I remember thinking that there wasn't much that I was impressed with but can't really remember. It was almost like Orgeron as the default wasn't much worse than the other options.

Fuente was a pretty popular one, Norvell might’ve been as well.

Larry Fedora, Mike Gundy

In the end it worked out pretty well. A championship and a now a top quality coach.

Herman, Fisher, Fuente, Fleck. The big problem was that after Herman it didn't seem like there were tons of great options

All we heard the whole fall was Jimbo and Herman

yep seems like slim pickens if gundy is best retrospective candidate and probably not likely that we could have gotten him to leave

It’s kind of funny how SW has changed coaching searches…any coach is a candidate now it used to only be coaches at lesser programs or assistants.

Fuente was since he got VT into the ACC CG in his first year, but he had a good sized buyout (for the time, at least). Norvell was in year 1 at Memphis and didn’t start to get some traction in the rumor mill until the next year.
It was actually a pretty lackluster group beyond Herman and Jimbo. Mullen and Larry Fedora were talked about a lot, as both were near their peaks at UNC and State. I remember a few people here were shilling hard for Bobby P, as this was before he went back to Louisville and put that program in a deep hole.
ETA: I do remember Gundy’s name mentioned some. He ended up being the better than most of the others mentioned.

1. Herman
2. Jimbo
3. Orgeron (interim)
Other names being floated around yet not much traction: Larry Fedora, Jim Mora Jr., Dana Holgerson, Mike Gundy, Mark Dantonio, Jeff Brohm

It was pretty much Jimbo said no then Herman played us so Alleva freaked out and there a fit and hired Orgeron

The coach at NC was. I think he was the OC at Baylor last year. Larry Fedora.

I actually wanted to take a swing at Lincoln Riley. It was right before Stoops left and he took over as HC.

I like to think of O as the longest tenured and most successful interim coach of all time.
