1. we don't the terms - he in the past said he wants all of Ukraine back, including Crimea. Can't blame him.

Difference is the US has been recently pushing for Ukraine to enter into negotiations.

It’s this simple:
1. Agree to never join NATO or allow NATO forces to be stationed in Ukraine
2. Cede Crimea for good
3. Allow Donetsk and Luhansk territories to be autonomous but still technically Ukrainian
It gives Putin the ability to claim victory with minimal impact to the status quo prior to February

I was told they were never being overrun. Also, why would they negotiate if they're in a position of strength?

Because when you are in a position of strength you have leverage and can actually get what you want out of a deal. Early on when they had "peace talks" their only option was basically surrender their country.
