Transfer Portal Rankings, #1

Brad Crawford with 247 Sports, ranks the Transfer Portal.
1. LSU TIGERS
(Photo: Getty)
Total transfers: 14
Hot names: Denver Harris, CB (Texas A&M); Zy Alexander, CB (Southeastern Louisiana); Logan Diggs, RB (Notre Dame)
Intel: The Tigers are the top team this portal cycle according to 247Sports after signing several immediate impact guys. Brian Kelly has been intentional in the transfer market at LSU and has ensured ahead of the 2023 season that his roster would be free of holes at key positions. He tried doing the same last fall, too. Landing quarterback Jayden Daniels from Arizona State and others led to a division title in Year 1 as the SEC's surprise team and another elite transfer class could result in a Playoff berth — at least that's the expectation in Baton Rouge for a preseason top-10 team. Harris and Alexander are the most notable gets this time around and both will play a ton of snaps at cornerback.

I believe BK when he says he wants to build the roster primarily through high school recruiting and I agree, but we’ve done so well in the portal the last two years. I think we’d be foolish to not continue taking 6-8 quality transfers every year who we’ve seen play in college.

The support staff at LSU keeps an eye on the Portal, if a former Louisiana Player wants to come home, we are here. But to look at some of the players, starters from Texas, Oregon St, and so many other schools, we have got players wanting to wear the P&G. Within the last 4 months, National Championships, LSU being on the Sports Channels, kids see this.
What Jay is doing with baseball, Kim with Women’s Basketball, kids see this, high schools, Parents.

Disagree that we need 6-8 transfers every year. Our roster has been so depleted to where we have to have transfers to stay competitive. However, Georgia and bama aren’t taking multiple transfers. I believe next year we really feast in recruiting in year 3

but I was told that CBK was losing his edge.

He can close a deal better than a New Car Sales Manager at a Dealership!

It's this kind of clulessness that makes bringing sensible discussion to an LSU site so difficult. When did anyone ever say Kelly hasn't killed the portal? He definitely has.
The issue is with his current crop of high school talent that is questioning whether "he's lost it" or not. As far as that goes, I personally don't think he's lost anything aside from obviously our best recruiter, Polian. Seems pretty obvious he was the heavy lifter. Night and day difference between the current crop and last years currently. Maybe it's just a bad year to go all in on the state.

I think LSU will do fine finishing in the 5-10 range of recruiting and taking a handful of high quality transfers. It's not ideal but it'll still keep them at the top of the heap in the NIL era. Even teams that consistently recruit in the top 6 are having mediocre results and there are plenty of recruiting misses out there.
With strong years in Louisiana you'd hope to break top 5.

Polian was good, but if you look at the OL brought in by Davis. Two of the main reasons the DL Coach Lindsey was brought in, his coaching and recruiting. Sloan, Hankton and Frank Wilson have assembled a good mixture within the offense. Steeples and Cooks have gotten DB’s from all over, high school and other colleges. The LB’s and House, look at the transition of Perkins.
Much of the same could be said for the offense Denbrock likes to use, his help in the development of the TE position.
All this has Kelly’s stamp on it.
Every place Kelly has been, he’s had to build his roster, not the previous coaches collection.
Polian was good, no doubt, got a lot from his Dad, but Kelly’s mark, was instilled during the last 6 years they spent at ND and LSU.
Polian now the Athletic Director at John Carroll University. He’s seen Kelly work, that can only be a plus. I wish him only the best.

There will always be spots to fill. I just hope we don't get to a point where we're processing that many guys out and trying to backfill those spots every year.

Processing? Seems like I’ve seen that word before. Just can’t remember where.

Gibbs, Steen, Burton, Ricks last year?
And Bama shows 4 new transfers as starters on the 2023 depth chart ansd 6 total in the 2-deep.

This. I definitely think it is now, and will continue to be the norm now in college football. There's no way I would turn a blind eye to 6-8 good to elite transfers that want to come here. We had at least 6 or seven QUALITY transfers that started for us last year at one time or another. No way I'm passing on those guys that are clearly more SEC ready than most 4* freshman & are alone responsible for several plays that give us wins that we may not have.

No doubt. With the way college football works now there's going to be room for proven, quality transfers every year. BK was forced to hit the portal hard just to build up the roster but I think going forward it would be a wise way to approach each season.

This is following it to the fullest extent of the rules!

I think it's fine to get to a point that you've recruited and developed young players on your roster to a level where you can bring in 3-5 quality transfers each year, preferably with more than one year to play.
What you can't do is load up with 14 or 15 transfers each year. With what he inherited, Brian Kelly really had no choice this year or last year, but it can't be an every-year thing, or it will hurt the high school recruiting, which is the foundation.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if schools are using our transfer numbers against us this year on the recruiting trail, telling kids that LSU will just bring in transfers to play in front of them if they go to LSU.
Like I said, Kelly had no choice last year and this year, but it will bite you if you try to do it every year, but I trust that Brian Kelly will reduce the transfer numbers going forward. It just might hurt us with a few recruits in the present. That can't be avoided.

Like I said within another post. Go to the 5:25 mark, Billy talks about Brad Davis.

where you can bring in 3-5 quality transfers each year,
If you have guys leaving for the draft after the 3rd year, you will always have room for a handful, maybe even a couple of starters, but if you're getting more than that, it means that you're missing in recruiting. Now, bringing in more guys that will just be depth isn't a problem. There will always be room for a few of those guys.
