It’s going to be a Christmas gift for someone who is always checking his tires.

Look for a battery inflator.
If this person has a battery tool system, most of the manufacturers have an inflator that fits it. Ryobi, Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc.

If they already have Milwaukee then it's a no-brainer:
12V
One I keep in my daily driver with an XC6.0 battery in it. Can set the psi and let it go, it will stop automatically when it gets to the set psi.
If they are married to any particular brand then that inflator is still a great choice. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t use it either for my own stuff or somebody else's. I had one of the bigger 12V inflators that required battery clips, gave it away because this one is more convenient and I haven't had to charge the 6.0 battery for several months now.

I have the Makita and love it, but didn’t look elsewhere since I have their tools/batteries.
Figure out what tools they have and get the same brand inflator.

Are you wanting something to carry in the car/truck or a small compressor to use at home?

I'd look at a 12-volt (that runs off the car battery/cig lighter). The ones that run off 20 v batteries are nice (my Dewalt is great), but if you are going to keep it in a car, you tie up a $50+ battery in perpetuity and will have to recharge it periodically.

A thread on this topic was started on the Outdoor board last week LINK.
FWIW, after getting a flat tire in the past year in an inconvenient and dangerous place to change the tire, and not having a portable air compressor in the vehicle which would have gotten me to a safer place make the change, I did some some internet research and I decided on VIAIR 88p for both my vehicles - a Tundra and Highlander.

Something else to keep in mind with these is a large backlit digital display
I lucked out in that my ~$30 Amazon one has this (as I didn't intentionally purchase it with those features) and it ended up being immensely helpful

Slime brand is junk. I've bought three of them - all junk.
