From a bad. fricking arse cyberpunk visual feast, this is fricking awesome. I love cyberpunk stuff and this delivers such beauty in spades.
In a lot of other areas, it just doesn’t work. But I don’t really care because I loved looking at the movie so much.
There’s a lot of style over substance. They try and cover so much ground that the actual plot feels unearned. This does feel like it should have been a two parter or trilogy. Watching it, you can tell a lot of stuff got cut out and there’s just strange choices. Like I feel like there were multiple scenes were important shots were cut that would clue us in on what’s happening.
And there’s just plenty of other movie errors. For example, the only black guy in Indonesia not being found within 30s while being hunted down in a major city.
Because while there is a human element that works on some level, it is way too front and center to really do anything for the movie when a majority of it is so stupid. I wondered if this movie was foreign a few times because some beats apps rated almost foreign.
Still, this movie is bold. I liked it. You will probably like it too if you’re willing to just go watch lots of action and just move past the pesky melodrama/weirdness

I got the same feeling. A beautifully constructed world, but a painfully derivative story. Obvious Blade Runner inspiration. I also got heavy Avatar vibes, even though Avatar was not listed by the director as one of the inspirations for the film. And it feels like this film is AI propaganda. Actually that's one thing I liked, the unsettled question of the AI world's real intentions.
The first cut was 5 hours long! There will be a substantial director's cut.

It felt like an anime. It was edited like an anime.

The fact that Hans Zimmer agreed to do the score actually made me think this movie was legit...

It is a fantastic movie.
Way more emotion/heart than it has any right to have.
Almost right at 2 hours and if it had another 30 minutes I would not have minded at all.

I’m glad you liked it.
There is heart in the movie but I don’t think it executed it great

I watched it this morning. I thought it was fantastic, but you can tell there is more to the story. There are very abrupt location changes that are clearly missing scenes. Give me the 5 hour cut and I’ll watch it like a limited series.
My only complaint was the casting of the villains. Allison Janney is not a believable or intimidating general.

Wow....what a beautiful but flawed film. There were so many moments that reminded me of the part in Rogue One when AT AT's were attacking the rebels and I'm wondering why are AT ATs being deployed in this situation other than it looks cool... like that but over and over in this film. Just one example....does New Asia have no air defence of any kind?
I still enjoyed it watching it though. Its a great looking movie and it even got me in the feels towards the end but the editing and script could've used some work.

I don’t think new Asia was as much a real country as it was an underground movement.

Yea I didn't get the wolrd they set up at all.. the alternative history set up at the beginning was cool but it was like the only players were the US and what ever New Asia was supposed to be.
I mean it seemed like a large territory where AI and humans had built a well developed cohabitative society with rapid response security forces , including aircraft..that were formidable and competent one minute and totally useless the next scene. And this NOMAD thing just acting with impunity, deploying forces,, blowing the shite out of what ever where ever without anyone taking a shot at it. It was obvious by the end it was extremely vulnerable.

Her character seemed like a joke. This is not a good movie.

Gareth Edwards seems like the king of making movies that look great visually, but have a paper thin plot and characters.

Yeah I'm in between on if I should go see this. A lot of complaints how the plot is thin and the payoff is not earned

I would go see it just based on the premise that it’s an original movie

Agreed. I found it odd just like some of the character choices and dialogue.

I listened to most of it and couldn’t help but wonder where the music was

Weird songs every time they were driving some sort of vehicle.

They all could have lived if robot toddler didn't try to put the chip in its robot mom.
