April 9, 1865. General Robert E. Lee, following the collapse of his defensive position around Petersburg, VA in late March and the subsequent pursuit by the Army of the Potomac, meets General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse to formally surrender the Army of Northern Virginia.

Robert E. Lee was a far greater man and American that either you or I will ever be. If you don’t beleive me, I suggest you crack open a history book and read about the man.

By taking up arms against the military he was a Colonel for and then asking to come back once he surrender to them?

Again. I tell you. Go study the man’s life. It’s a fascinating story. It will both inspire and educate you.

Lincoln’s celebration was cut short.

Why don’t you share what you know with the class
The whole ‘go look it up yourself’ posturing is useless and comes across as egotistical IMO

So is Stalin's life story.
Doesn't mean we have to respect what he did.

That’s the problem with people nowadays. They’re too fricking lazy to think or learn because it’s too much effort to read a damned book.
You cannot give anything close to a proper summary of Robert E. Lee in one post unless you have about an hour to kill, which I don’t. That’s why I urge people to go read about the man themselves. Once you do you’ll realize how stupid and ignorant people who bash and disrespect R.E. Lee sound.

To compare Robert E. Lee to Stalin only shows a breathtaking ignorance of history on your part.

Lee was a man of his times. The common fallacy in studying history is placing today's morals and ethics on those who lived in a very different time and place with societal norms completely foreign to us.
Had Lee gone Union at the outset (something he considered) the war would've been a lot shorter.

I've read the Grant biography and numerous Lee "biographies".
Grant is much more interesting and inspiring.
And respectable.

She may rise again, yet.

Lee did not surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse.
He surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse (a village) in the home of Wilmer McLean.
