Had a pet white rat. He was very attached to us. Always wanted to sit between my wife and I. Loved to eat a strand of spaghetti dangled over him. Loved a good back scratching.

If I put him down on the other side of the room, he'd run right back as quick as he could and climb up onto the sofa.

Also had an African Grey parrot. Very smart birds. Huge vocabulary over time and the really do know what they are talking about.

Both of my kids have lizards (bearded dragon and a leopard gecko). My wife breeds crested geckos to sale as a hobby. The geckos are weird since they can't blink, they lick their eyeballs to keep them from drying out. She used to keep fish before getting into reptiles.

I'm good with my dog. As long as I don't have to mess with the reptiles, I don't mind and she enjoys them.

Spiny lizards and geckos and birds and garden spiders and praying manti that take up residence in the yard get named, then fed and watered where possible.

When they were little, my kids would catch lizards in the bushes and keep them as pets. The lizards would last a week and then pass away. We'd find mummified lizard carcasses in the sofa cushions.

Got him when he was young. Rats are social animals and they are smart. He'd get scared if he wasn't near us or in his cage.

Built a 6' tinker toy maze tower and put him on the top with set of rungs that he could find a path down. The first time he picked his way through the rungs and took a few minutes. The second time he went right to a corner, wrapped his rear legs around the column and slid down.
