Man forced to ditch $115K Ford EV truck during family road trip to Chicago

But Bala was quickly hit with the reality of owning and operating an EV soon after the purchase. The vehicle compelled him to install two charges – one at work and one at home – for $10,000. To accommodate the charger, he had to upgrade his home’s electric panel for $6,000.
In all, Bala spent more than $130,000 – plus tax.

Fast charging stations – which only charge EV’s up to 90% – cost more than gas for the same mileage. On the family’s first stop in Fargo, North Dakota, it took two hours and $56 to charge his vehicle from 10% to 90%. The charge was good for another 215 miles.

EVs have a time and place. Cross country trips aren’t one of them.

In all, anyone that dumps 130k into an EV setup and thinks that they are more than social credit and a short trip vehicle is a fricking moron. In the current state of batteries, you aren't taking it across country if time is a concern.
His issues of getting a light assembly taking 6 months, that is for all vehicles right now. One of the guys that works with me has a dodge 2500 diesel and, under warranty, he put it in the shop for a fuel pump that shut his truck down. They had it for 8 months last year and his warranty was gone by the time he got it back out. They covered that on it but he lost 8 months to a fuel pump off his warranty time that wasn't added back.
It amazes me that people buy something with the IDEA that it is a good idea without doing any homework on it. This guy buying a Ford Lightning for work, fishing, taking to the cabin is just stupid and then complaining about it just shows how stupid he is. No sympathy for this guy at all.
ETA. EVs fall under the guise of a luxury vehicle. If you have to ask how much it is to maintain it, you probably can't afford it.

Believe they are ending ice engines by 2035 or so, will there be no more cross country trips?

They will keep pushing this number back sorta like RealID requirement in louisiana

No ICE vehicle has ever broke down and ruined a cross country vacation

This is what they want

You're really trying to compare a simple refueling to a car breaking down?

Based on this story, the road trip doesn’t even have to be cross country for the truck to become impractical. To use an example that applies in this part of the world, if going from 90% battery to 10% battery only gets you 215 miles, you wouldn’t be able to travel the distance from Birmingham to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach in that amount of battery usage.

and a vehicle type. A large, incredibly heavy truck does not make any sense to be EV until they can figure out how to get 300 miles on it without it being so heavy that the roads break.

The car didnt ruin the vacation, the father did by not planning properly.

I would say this is correct.
Living in a part of the country where a short notice regional road trip for evacuations, driving for vacations, etc right now means at least one ICE vehicle in our household is a requirement. BUT, it also means an EV for local use can make alot of sense too for my wife to drive to work, evenings out, Ubering the kiddo and friends around, etc.

Correct. He chose a EV for a trip requiring gasoline

The charger on his route was broken. He went to a different town but it was broken there as well. Was he supposed to plan on fixing it himself? Where was his breakdown in planning?
Here are the gas stations near Albertville, MN
Would he have had the same problems finding another working gas station?
So yes....him having an EV TRUCK absolutely did ruin the trip. If you need a truck, buy a truck. If you want an EV, then buy an EV car that can go more than 300 miles.

quote:Yeah I'm gonna pass on all of this. The new Kum and Go I frequent has the greatest gas pumps I've ever used. I didn't know there was any product development left in the industry but these things are light and fast as hell. Cut my time at the pump down from like 90 seconds to 60 seconds.
On the second stop, in Albertville, Minnesota, the free charger was faulty and the phone number on the charging station was of no help, he said. The family drove to another charging station in Elk River, Minnesota, but the charger was faulty there as well.

He didn't know this before buying it? Let's all laugh at him. You can't take EV's on road trips.

Bala told FOX Business he believes the government needs to do more to "provide consumers with the right information
People have to make the right choices. I want to tell everybody to read my story," he said. "Do your research before even thinking about it and make a wiser choice."
Sounds like he's giving advice he never heeded himself and to top it off thinks the government should be the ones doing it.
No empathy for this guy who dropped 130k on this set up as he should known all of the limitations beforehand.
1) He lives in Canada where it can get cold and we all know EV battery limitations in cold weather.
2)apparently wants to make cross country trips with some stops in rural areas when it's known that the EV fast charging infrastructure is in its infancy.
3) im also going out on a limb and say he dropped big bucks for a service panel upgrade to accommodate the max charge rate of ford's charging station, but probably could have been fine with a slower home charger or a derated charger.
Dudes a dumbass.

Nope. EVs are worse for the environment than ICE.
