What are some memories from your young vacations to Grand Isle and other Louisiana areas?

What are some things you remember about trips to Grand Isle or other local vacations from when you were young? I've been doing a little writing about my younger days while I'm dealing with health issues, and I'm on Grand Isle.
What are some sights, sounds, smells, textures or temperatures that you can still remember? Floating on a patched-up tractor tire inner tube? Catching blue crabs on a trotline with a dip net? Sitting on the porch of the inn and listening to people play the guitar and sing?

I did that one day when I was about five years old for the whole day. I had rub rash under my arms and between my legs that night so bad I cried.
The worst trip though was when myself and four friends were locked up for the Bicentennial. July 4,1976. By the Jefferson Parish riot squad. There were there because the rumor was that the New Africa Nation was going to take over the island.
My Parents lived on Grand Isle for fifteen years after they retired.

Went once while at LSU with some friends. Never again- was hideous and smelled like crap. I grew up going to Gulf Shores and points eastward in the panhandle so maybe I was spoiled….

We went for a week to Grand Isle every summer when I was a kid.
It was hot and miserable and nothing to do.
Late 70’s to late 80’s.
The best thing about the whole trip was leaving.

Back in the day, our family and our aunt and uncle (with 2 kids) were playing in the water at Grand Isle.
My uncle from over in Kinder looks up and sees a dophin jumping through the waves and begins screaming, "SHARK! SHARK!" then running for safety on the sand, leaving his wife and kids waist deep in the water.
It was brought up often for years.

Mosquitoes if the wind was blowing the wrong way. The “Waters Edge” hotel. Much longer (water to camp) beaches
Crabs galore—always brought old sneakers as “Grand Isle shoes”. We caught dozens and dozens of fat crabs.
Surf fishing for Specks.
The Sunflower. The lights from the oil rigs shining at night. The old bridge.

A tornado hitting the beach while we were on it. We had to haul arse out of there. That and the shitty oyster shell water where you had to wear shoes not to cut your feet. Let's say we didn't go there too often. Mid 1970's. Way preferred Dauphin island or Gulf Shores back then.

Surf fishing and catching nothing but lady fish and cats when $100 bill floats right in front of me. It was the only time I walked back to the beach with no fish and happy as hell!

I remember going to Toledo Bend for about a month every summer staying with my Grandparents. Fishing, skiing, and playing doctor with the Texas girls.

Grandpa and I were fishing in the surf. He used to wear the string around his waist to put the fish we caught on until we got out. Had about 7 or 8 specks on the line. When we finally walked out, they were all half eaten. Either a shark or dolphin had went to town on them
