TX implements road tax for EV - Yahoo News

EV drivers in Texas don’t pay at the pump, but will have to start paying a significant annual fee that critics are calling “punitive.”
Driving an electric vehicle in Texas is soon to become more expensive. Governor Greg Abbott signed a law (SB 505) on May 13 instituting new fees for registering and owning EVs in the state. Under the bill, electric car owners will have to pay $400 upon registering their vehicle. Then, every subsequent year, EV drivers will have to shell out an additional $200. Both of those fees are on top of the cost of the standard annual registration renewal fees, which are $50.75 each year for most passenger cars and trucks.

They still coming out ahead. They were cheating the system. We have to pay taxes

A Montana LLC costs $800. Seems more reasonable every year

Worth it not to have to dick around with gas stations and probably still a money saver.

Kinda weird to do after luring Tesla to Texas

I’m usually team “frick taxes” but this is fine. You should have to pay the same as everyone else for what you’re using. The people with ev’s this likely won’t hurt anyway.

You still can’t legally buy a Tesla in Tx. You have to purchase it through a different state then register it here yourself.

When did that change?

That’s completely fair
We pay road taxes through gasoline purchases

Not really. It’s a road tax fee
Louisiana has it too

Texas has a $0.20/gal tax
$200 is is equivalent to buying 1000 gallons.
20,000 miles at 20mpg would equal paying $200 in taxes.
Think that $200 year is excessive as most cars are better then 20 mpg and most people drive less the. 15000 mile/year.

You sure about that?

In South Carolina I think the fee is an extra $250 for an EV. State not getting gas taxes from them but they put the same wear and tear on the road. It makes sense.
ETA: I think I had to pay an extra $200 fee when I registered my car here, what they call a “Yankee tax”. So be it. Worth it.

Yeah, spending an hour at a charging station sounds way better.

It does as long as they have the roads to show for it. Louisiana doesn't deserve more money to squander

She’s never used a public charger. Like many EV owners.

It will negatively effect the sales of Tesla, which is now brings an enormous tax revenue and employs thousands of Texans.

meh. seems reasonable.
$200 a year isn't reasonable at all.
If you're in an ICE car that gets 30mpg you'd have to drive like 30k miles to equal that $200 in gas tax payments.
They should pay something but it needs to be somewhere more in the $70-$100 range if states are going to do a flat payment.
The best system would be to get an odometer reading every year and charge based on how many miles you went but of course Texas is busy trying to straight up ban yearly safety inspections so we are never going to get the most rational of solutions.
Also, the gas tax in Texas has not changed since the early 90s. It needs to get raised but of course that's pretty much impossible here since nobody is willing to push past political dogma.
