“You can no longer work from home”

I haven’t received a message of this kind yet, although my work is trying to encourage people to come back into the office to some degree (which I have no issue with). But I do know a lot of people who have been told they were no longer allowed to work from home.
If you were told working from home was no longer allowed, how would you feel about receiving work requests after business hours? I find it hypocritical that a company would tell you working from home is not an option while sending work requests outside of normal business hours and expecting employees to respond quickly.
But simultaneously, I’ve worked from home after hours long before covid. So I’m torn on the issue. Thoughts?

For the record, I consider this a completely reasonable and valid response.

I don’t work a job that requires after hours work. I’d find a new job

I got after hours requests from time to time before covid and would make a decision based on who was asking and what it was for. I still do the same now.

At the end of my day work is over. I don’t respond to anything (texts, emails, office IMs) until the next morning.
This is not different whether I work from home or at the office

Once I clocked out I would mute calls from my employer and not sign into my email until the next day. If they say you can't work from home, then there'd be no working from home. Companies shouldn't have it both ways.

Well if you want to get/keep young engineering talent in my field, some portion of week has to be allowed wfh. Hybrid is my company’s compromise on that. When we integrate/test, expectation is your arse is on site

going out on a limb here and say that you'll be in the minority

This. Use the same philosophy that you used before covid.

Are you against suggesting and proposing a hybrid arrangement with whoever decides working arrangements at your company?

Do what your employer asks of you.
Figure out what needs to be done and do that, without being asked.
Do those two things better than your co-workers and you will achieve.
Push back in what your employer asks of you and your odds of advancement drop dramatically.

I feel bad for all the lgbtwfh that they’re gonna actually make work this year. I hope y’all don’t get chafed

It's not the 90s anymore.
If you are successful, you should be able to work from anywhere.
WE had a salesman who never came into the office but set sales records. None of the management cared what he did, just keep the money rolling in.

Very possible. But the reality is if an employer wants to require you to go in person and also expects you to work from home, the employee has a choice to apply elsewhere.
But my question is whether or not employers are wrong for making this type of request of their employees? It’s hard to not see the hypocrisy.

If they aren't paying me to work after hours, it waits until tomorrow. If the boss wants to make a fuss then make sure you let them know you'll be putting all that extra time on your timesheet (have this conversation via email so there's a record of their responses).

It's a balance.
I'm never technically "off", unless I'm on vacation or something.
So I'll take calls, answer emails "after hours", but its also understood that if I need to leave the office early or come in late some days to take care of personal things, nobody will care.

I don’t know where you got this idea, but for the record I wouldn’t even have the first clue on who to propose this to. And I don’t think our CEO would respond to my emails considering how many people work for him.

I intentionally don’t have my phone set up to notify me of emails.
So if they want me to do something at home they have to call me and talk to me.
This doesn’t stop after hours requests but it greatly reduces them.
If it is not important enough for them to call me and speak to me in person then it can wait until morning.
