My kids fight all the time. Am I overreacting?

Son 7
Daughter 10
Both are at the top of their classes and have received recognitions. Daughter won the Director’s Award last year for top academic third grader in the county school system. I say this, because it’s not like they’re a couple of trashy dumb kids fighting over the last of the food scraps.
They fight about EVERYTHING and CONSTANTLY. I pick them up from school care around 4:15 and they bitch and fight until they go to bed at 8:30.
I have 3 brothers…the youngest is 17 years older than me, so they were all out of the house by the time I was 2 or 3 and I was effectively an only child. Because of this, I may not have a good grip on sibling relationships.
The fighting often starts in the car. My son gets bored and starts purposely trying to aggravate anyone who will take the bait. It’s almost always his sister who breaks first and they explode in a fit of arguing where neither of them is willing to back off…they both have to have the last word.
It makes me absolutely miserable. I love spending time with them individually, but am growing to detest the times when they’re together. Mom is pretty much feeling the same way.
Am I the one who needs counseling, or is this pretty normal kid behavior?

Sounds like typical adolescent siblings to me

I am 5 years older than my brother. I used to start fights with him out of boredom. Then he started going to the kitchen to grab knives. Then my parents had to hide the sharp knives, so I could kick his arse again.

boy and girl 3 years apart who are forced to live with each other??? Typical.
You can stop one but probably not both. You have to separate them to get peace.

Funny that OP is crying over arguments and not an all out brawl.

Since when did any siblings of any socioeconomic status not fight.
Harvard grads cheat, lie, steal, commit adultery, embezzlement, and exhibit all sorts of other unscrupulous behaviors.
I'm struggling to understand how your kids academic accomplishments has anything to do with sibling conflict or restricting unwanted behaviors.

Sounds like the problem my be with the persons raising them.

Honestly, that is pretty much normal. Kids vie for attention and will basically do anything to get that attention.

Mine did too at that age and I actually thought they hated each other.
They are great now it will pass

The smarter you are, the more compliant and well-behaved you are, duh. You ever hear of Stephen Hawking throwing hands? Didn't think so.

I once threw a brick at my sisters face and cut her forehead open. She’s my best friend now.

They are young to not really cause any real damage so.....Buy 2 pair of boxing gloves and some head gear. Lock them in a empty room and tell them to get it out of their system.

Grow some balls and beat your son's arse. If they're fighting for hours and he instigates it like you said, deal with him.

My sister and I did this too, we’re best friends now. They’ll grow out of it.
