MLB MVP voting in 2001. A look back at Todd Helton finishing 9th.

197 hits
146 RBI
1.116 OPS
.336 AVG
How did voting work back then?
I couldn’t imagine someone with a 1.116 OPS finishing 9th in today's game.

Mile High was considered a cheat code back then

the two guys who finished directly behind him, both had a higher WAR the Helton

Yeah but to not even finish in the top five of voting seems a little gratuitous.

You may have a point with Helton in particular because his home/away splits were somewhat even
But for the 5 years leading up to that batters would TEE OFF in Mile High compared to other stadiums, the splits were insane, so the narrative was no Rockies’ numbers were respected
Helton is a victim of that

I don't think he's a hall guy but Helton had some fantastic seasons. Much like Olerud. Sustained greatness not there but short stint greatness indeed.

They were putting up video game numbers back then. It’s not surprising he finished ninth, especially given that the Rockies sucked.
In 2001…
Bonds hit 73 HRs
Sosa hit 64 HRs
Freaking Luis Gonzalez hit 59 HRs
Bret Boone drove in 141 runs
Never mind A-Rod’s and Manny’s usual ridiculous stat lines

How many home runs did he hit???? That was a huge factor at that time. You want robbery??? Check out Gary Shiefields 1996 stat line and compare to others in the NL. A monster season.

I know there are probably better stretches, but for me, 99-04 Todd Helton is the best it gets at 1B.

Bonds and Sosa both had a WAR over 10 and were in a different stratosphere of inflated numbers. So they are clearly 1 and 2.
What is most interesting to me is the players with the 3, 4, 5 highest WAR all played on the same team - Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Luis Gonzalez.
If this season played out today Helton would finish above Berkman, Chipper, Pujols, and maybe jumps over Shawn Green.
The flip side is Randy for sure jumps him, and most likely schilling.
But at the end of the day, putting up big numbers in coors field on a dead last team in 2001 isn’t generating much acclaim.

The shite you choose to both waste your, and by default our, time on is nothing short of amazing.
Someone needs to Jane Goodall your arse because your species needs to be studied for science.

This is the correct answer. No one was winning any award playing half their games in Coors Field. And the Rockies were bad as usual.

I love how everyone is referencing WAR as some determining factor - no one cared about WAR back then

They voted for the guys that did the most steroids.

the team collectively his .331 at home and .253 on the road.

He finished 5th in OPS, he led the league in nothing, and he played in Coors before the dehumidifier.
