Skip Bertman's biggest recruiting misses.

5 national championships between 1990-2000. Hard to imagine a kid from Louisiana not going there if given a chance.
Is there any players that almost picked that ended up dominating at another school?
Guys that were drafted straight out of high school don't count.

Wade LeBlanc from Barbe was Alabama’s ace. Don’t remember if that was at the end of Bertman or beginning of Smoke.

Trying to make one last run at it in 2001 and bringing in all those misfit transfers. They had talent but that team was a hot mess

Bertman would not allow a player to pitch and play another position. That was his way and I am not saying that it was wrong, but we lost several players that wanted to do both. I remember a guy named Aubrey from Shreveport that ended up at Tulane and was a stud. There may have been another guy that we missed out on in that era that also went to Tulane and did both. I remember a guy from Baker or Central that we lost because he wanted to pitch and play a position. His name escapes me now...

Kenny Holubec from Houma, La. Played at ULM from 1997-2000. He was 23-5 and is still the strikeout record holder at ULM with 321.

Yea Skip told him he couldn’t play two way at LSU, and in his first game against LSU he hit for the cycle.

Yes, thanks for helping out an old man with his memory. Wiese was a stud that ended up at Miss State. It was said at the time that he wanted to play at LSU but Bertman told him that he couldn't also pitch, so he went to MSU.

And he ultimately became a full time position player anyway. I think LSU wanted him to pitch only.

Yes, in 2001. I was there and it sucked. Mestepey pitched game 1 for us and we won in extra innings. We got beat pretty good the next 2. Tulane had the better team that year.

Was Will Clark at State before Skip got here?

Kenny was never offered anything from LSU, though as a huge A&M, doubt he would have gone.
Also from the same team: Brandon Belanger and Gary Thomas. Brandon would have gone to LSU in a heartbeat, he was an all-American at Tulane, and actually pitched against LSU in that 2001 series. And Gary got an offer only after he had been given a minor league deal.
