Is this championship caliber offense being wasted with a bad defense? Yes. But I wouldn’t put all of the blame on Kelly. Yes he hires the defensive coaches and it is ultimately his responsibility but you must remember this offense was almost entirely built by Kelly. JD5 was his guy, the O line is pretty much 100% Kelly. I’m just saying that the offense is Kelly’s side of the ball and most of our best offensive players are guys brought in by Kelly.

I'm confused, so it's Kelly's to waste b/c he built it? Is that the argument?

If I might, maybe the ‘argument’ is he isn’t a defense guru. If so, let’s hope he isn’t too vain to surround himself with people smarter on defense.

There has been some serious bad luck as part of this story regarding the defense. Ridiculous that some pretend it’s not a factor. More rallying around and less criticism is in order.

What if I told you that BK has never been a position coach or coordinator on the offensive side of the ball, only the defensive.

It’s like 2002

The side of the ball the head coach knows is locked and loaded, the other side of the ball ain’t there yet.

The offense has done very little to protect a defense that is known to not only be weak but also thin (at least with who they play in front 7).

I am not talking about going back to Les’s version of spreading out a defense by mixing in some toss sweeps to short side of the field in with the usual runs between the tackles, but when we mix in at least a couple of 5 to 6 minute drives (or longer) our defense seems to get less worn out and to have a little left in the tank in the 4th quarter to make a needed play.

I don’t think we had any drives 5 minutes or longer in the 3 loses this season (using ESPN gamecast which can be iffy).

Only win without a 5 minute drive was grambling. Ark had 1 which was the last offensive drive of game (also had 3 more earlier above 4 minutes). The rest of the wins have had at least two drives of 5 or more minutes.

In those 3 loses not only do we get out scored in the 4th quarter by 1 to 2 TDs, but our offensive scoring also slows down. We might be wearing out both our defense and our some of offensive at times like the oline.

How many of the long drives in wins came after LSU built a comfortable lead and was protecting it? I’m not sure you have cause and effect in the right order.

MSU - had 2 in first half and 1 in second half
Missouri - had 2 in first half
Auburn - had 1 in first quarter and 1 in 4th (LSU up 16 at basically start of 4th right after Auburn just scored 1st play of 4th).
Ark - 1 in 4th quarter to take lead leaving just 5 seconds left.

Army - had 2 in 2nd half with LSU well ahead
Grambling - had zero (but it was grambling)

3 loses - had zero

Outside of Army the wins had at least 1 drive or more between 4 and 5 minutes on top of ones mentioned above with MSU & Auburn having 2 of these and Ark having 3 of these.

If going down to 4 minutes or higher drives
Total
MSU - 5
Ark - 4
Auburn - 4
Missouri- 3
Army - stays at 2
Grambling - 1

FSU - 1
ole Miss - 1
Alabama - 1

I went with the 5 minutes or longer as loses didn’t have any, but just using gamecast it seemed if there were drives of 5 minutes or longer there likely were more drives the next step down in length.

Our defense starts poorly, continues poorly, and finishes poorly. They don’t get worn out…they have poor technique and don’t know where to be. When your defense can’t play defense…you grab points however you can. You don’t risk screwing a drive up to kill time when you can get the TD.

Kelly sucks.

He gave a game ball to House after a meaningless game.

Think about that.

The man is clueless.

He has a 95 million dollar 10 yr contract . For that money he needs to hire a great defensive coach , not a friend who needs a job . Another “ friend who needs a job “ hire was Polian as special teams coach .

Did you build this whole thread just to say?

You have to play at least competent defense and special teams in our league to succeed. Period.

The special teams was abysmal last year and the defense this year is the worst ever.

What if I told you he has 300 career wins and has won multiple coach of the year awards? Give this dude a fkn minute, bro. You have zero wins and neither does your daddy or your pappy.

I’m pretty sure he knows wtf he’s doing.

It’s not like LSU has bad players on defense. They have one of the best players In nation…they don’t use him right. I’m fine with this!

BS on the not wearing down.

Our defense starts below average and gets worse as it wears down especially at end of each half.

Our offense isn’t as productive in 4th quarter as it is in 2nd and 3rd. Outside of grambling and army our offense has often started slowly, exploded in 2nd and 3rd quarters, and slowed down in 4th (outside of loses still better than 1st quarter, but I think Missouri has been only game where highest point total of the game was in 4th quarter).

In the 3 loses the offense has only scored 14 points total in the 4th quarters (with 7 points being the late TD with just over a minute to play against FSU). They also don’t have a drive of 5 minutes or longer in these games

Example of the mentality of not eating clock and protecting defense late:
Against Ole Miss Diggs had 100 yards rushing thru the 3rd quarter, but in the 4 drives during the 4th quarter he had 2 carries for 1 yard while LSU was still in the lead for the first 3 of the 4 drives.
