He was on OTB this morning and he said that facing a guy that has no control can be just as difficult on a hitter as a guy with pin point accuracy. Basically if the pitcher has no idea where the ball is gonna go, neither does the hitter. You add to the fact that this wild pitcher throws 101 and has a wipeout slider and you get the results LSU had on Saturday.

He did say that LSU should have been more patient. If we weren't so willing to swing the bat, the kid probably walks 15 guys and/or gets pulled earlier.

Just thought I'd share his insight with anyone that missed the interview.

so glad to see that so many in the "in game" thread were on this point.

Just take every pitch...he walks so many he starts walking runs in and gets pulled.

They really weren't in a position to just sit there and take pitches though. They could take obvious balls, but when he got ahead he was deadly.

There was also an issue of an inconsistent zone, which can wreak havoc on a plate approach.

Yeah, it was very aggravating that some players kept swinging.

They nailed in on the broadcast I thought. Dude can't control his fastball. He did however have control of that slider. So just get up there and sit on slider and frick everything else.

Made total sense to me based on what I was watching all game. We obviously didn't do that.

Yup. I remember Jones taking on a 3-2 with a pitch 3-4” below the knees. Ump rang him up.

I remember another pitch that was inside and almost caught Pearson on the hands called a strike.

People kept the “don’t swing and you’ll walk” mentality while our players were striking out looking on balls too.

Ump’s zone was shite and even by the 9th inning our batters on 0-0 counts had to be defensive not knowing where the zone was.

This is not an excuse but if LSU would have had Morgan in the middle of the lineup more innings get strung together.

White is playing at about 70% right now if I had to guess.

Jones was just overmatched on each and every pitch.

That reliever Simpson completely dominated our lefties when he came in...he deserves credit.

Brecht had no idea where his fastball was going. That slider was filthy though and hard to lay off of.

What did he say about LSU’s pitching in the game? 12 runs.

KState’s lefty also held us down.

Biggest concern through the first 7 games...

Can we hit lefties?

We swung at TONS of sliders. The issue is that the slider started down main street but ended in the left handed batters box. The idea that he was throwing sliders that stayed strikes consistently is false imo.

Once they see enough of them, i think we’ll hit them okay….but it does concern me with johnsons mentality of lots of lefties in the lineup

He said that Riley is more valuable out of the pen and Dutton didn't have his stuff. He said once they got to Hellmers it was about saving the rest of the relievers for Sunday and Tuesday. Basically said we conceded after Dutton was off.

Our veteran hitters layed off just fine and got walked. It was our younger guys and Tommy White (who I thought would have better discipline) that couldn't lay off.

That's still a big question mark...we have looked terrible at times

He's pressing so hard right now.

He went 3 1/3, so not really sure what he means here. The bigger issue was their long reliever Simpson had a great outing and Riley Cooper had trouble getting people out with 2 strikes. Fielding issues didn't help either.

I mean we did walk 9 times in 4ish innings. I think we just couldn't get the timely hit against him, which happens. And on the other side, they did a lot of their damage with 2 outs and 2 strikes. The cumulative effect led to pitching decisions that wouldn't have been made in a closer game and that contributed to more run differential as well.

There were 3 instances of strike 3s called balls on Cooper. The biggest was in the first inning with the HR, but all three turned into hits for Iowa and I think 2/3 turned into runs.

I don't think he was as bad as the line indicated, and I don't think he's out of his element as a starter. But I do think we need guys to step up and displace him so he can move back into a relief role. It would allow him to be optimized a little more but most importantly it would mean one of the other pitchers has significantly stepped up.
