It seems like most conferences are going after powerhouse football schools. How is expansion going to affect college basketball and other sports?

Football pays the freight. All other sports are just along for the ride.

Not true for all schools. I bet Kansas, UNC, Duke, Kentucky etc. make twice their revenues from basketball compared to football.

Yeah when speaking of revenue I think basketball can float quite a number of schools. After football and basketball though, the revenue the other sports produce are pretty minor.

Mountain West or Conference-USA seems likely. I think we'll be more competitive in either of the two in all sports. Surely Utah and TCU run the show in the MWC, and who knows how long it will be until the WAC goes back to a 16-team conference and just renames it the Mountain West Athletic Conference?

Since basketball is the main source for generating revenue, it doesn't really matter where KU goes. KU joining a new conference will certainly bring more attention to it in basketball. In baseball, KU would fair better in the MWC, but it'd be nice to see them compete against Rice and Southern Miss every year.

Put it this way, KU's basketball program can assist the hiring of a big-name football coach if the program ever puts together a string of 10-win seasons and becomes a "sexier" coaching job. That's how much revenue is generated.

ETA: But, that will never happen because we're either moving to a non-BCS conference, or we're just fricked all the way around. Hell, I wouldn't mind joining the FCS.

In 2005 LSU didn't even break even in men's basketball. Only football was in the black for that particular season. I don't see lots of schools paying for everything with basketball

None of the conferences/schools care about the other sports when you break it down to money. Otherwise Kansas would have had a lot to say in this.

I agree that those schools are in the black, for sure, in basketball. But twice the football revenue? No way. Maybe Duke.

But of the 119 teams in the BCS, you can only say that about a few teams.

There's only like 20 D1 schools that turn a profit in football. There's even less schools that has an Athletic Dept. that is self-sustaining.

There are probably 4 or 5 schools that BBall pays for football and the rest of their AD. And those schools have basically nothing (historically) that compares to their bball program (ie Duke's football team sucks and is bottom tier).
