How they can still use the "academics" argument as a reason to not join the SEC when if Missouri joins, the SEC will have 4 AAU members and the Big 12 just 3?

Certainly it's harder. I never believed (and will never believe) the "academic argument" based on the whole US News rankings etc. To the extent UT uses academics as a reason not to be in a conference, I always thought it was more along the lines of wanting to be in a conference with other institutions that are largely seen as outstanding research institutions/systems (i.e., multiple campuses with at least one med school, law school etc.)...where research grants would be shared, pursued together etc.. A&M largely fits that bill - certainly most of the Big 10 does. UCLA/Stanford/Cal fits that bill.
To be honest, I have no idea if Missouri fits that regardless of the AAU thing. Same, I'm not sure which of the SEC schools do or do not fit that definition as well. All of them very well may for all I know.
Just my two cents - other Texas grads might have different ideas.

Texas wouldnt want to join the SEC.. they wouldnt have enough control of what goes on.

Dilrod hit it right on the head. In the SEC Texas would not be calling all the shots anymore. The other SEC schools will not bend over for them like all the schools in the BIG12 do including Oklahoma. I live in Austin so I hear all the crap on the radio about the academics. It's all BS as far as I'm conserned. The other reason is they do not want to play an SEC schedule. They would rather play there powder puff schedule everyear and then get there ARSE kicked by the SEC champs in the BCS title game. Atleast A&M is willing to come and play with the big boys and quit taking it up the tailpipe by BEVO.

the academics arguement has always been thinner than an anorexic. you really can't make that argument from the Big 12 when a stone's throw hits schools like Texas Tech and KSU on all sides

That is the most reasonable thing I've seen a Texas fan post here maybe ever.
