Big picture: what precipitated all of this?

Obviously, it's some combination of money/power, but what specifically led to these shifts?

I find the whole thing fascinating. I think it shows how what we take for granted is really just an ever-shifting sand.

I would agree with that.

And Notre Dame's impression that it was above any conference in football as it refused to join. Big 10 then went in a different direction.

Arkansas jumping from the SWC in 1991.

Led the way for a bigger SEC.

Led the way for conference championship game revenues.

Led to the uneasy marriage of SWC/Big 8.

We started it.

Big12 not paying everybody an equal share and giving Texas/OU preferential treatment with money.

People have been talking about realignment ever since the Big 12 formed. I think it was a fundamentally flawed conference. this was all inevitable once the SEC proved the two division model worked.

Nebraska being given the ultimatum is what tipped the ice berg.

$$$, of course.

But the mega conference expansion would have been prevented if ND joined the Big 10. They would have stopped at 12 teams with ND, and not reached out to Nebraska.

I've said this before, but ND not joining a conference isn't because "they think they are above all of that". It's because they have a 100 year tradition of being independent, and that model has been very successful in terms of branding the school as a national school. If you were the AD of ND, would you want to screw that up?

This.

If Nebraska, CU etc. got an equal share of TV revenue, they would probably be content with staying in the Big XII.

Actually, SMU receiving the death penalty would be the catalyst.

I agree with this and Sprint's comments. Big 12's revenue sharing pissed off Nebraska. They bolt to a more stable conference regarding payouts. Hell, look at the Big 12 South's tie-breaker from the 2008 football season and you'll see that they have flaws throughout the conference.

agree

plus wanting a 12th for the CCG - I think they started out focused on Notre Dame and gradually realized there were other very profitable options

No, I disagree. I think the forming of the SIAA in 1894 and the Big Ten in 1896 started this whole process.

Wow, that was a great read and I think pretty much nails it. Delaney is one smart guy.
