The LSU coach is the highest paid state employee. BK received $400,000 annually from the State as part of his contract thus the governor is technically his boss.

As dumb as he may be, he knows the coach's salary is paid by private donors and revenue generated by the athletic department....not taxpayer dollars. HOWEVER, he also knows most people in LA are totally ignorant to that fact. Thus, he can make populist comments trying to curry favor with the every man by saying the "little guy" shouldn't be paying these exorbitant coaches' salaries...all the while know the "little guy" has long not been the person paying the coach's salary
Its' populist BS to make it sound like a politician is "fighting for the every man" when, in actuality, that fight isn't necessary.
It won't have any bearing on what the new coach will be paid. The donors providing the money will determine that.

The state pays him $300k.
Which means they know the University will have to rely on athletic department funds which itself relies partially on private funds. But the contracts that require this reliance ARE STILL State approved. If State officials want LSU to rely less on donors in the form of huge buyouts, they have the power to make sure they do.
Just because the LSU Athletic Department is self-funded doesn't mean it's its own political entity.

You think LSU is a private company?

Cool. Again, the contractual obligation solely belongs to LSU.

$400,000,000 of LSU's annual revenues are sourced from state/federal funds(primarily via tax revenue share). That's enough to float the entire athletic department. Any donations used to foot a buyout are still wasted resources as they could have been allocated to other objectives if the buyout never existed
But back to this "anonymous donation" narrative, I noticed a strange coincidence looking at LSU's operating budget. So Kelly's base salary was $400,000 per year, he had 6 years remaining, that's $2,400,000. He was also owed $500,000 every July 15th through the end of 2030 as a longevity bonus, that's another $2,500,000. Finally he was owed $9mm for 2026, $9.2mm for 2027, $9.2mm for 2028, $9.4mm for 2029, $9.4mm for 2030 and $9.6mm for 2031 in supplemental compensation, that's $55.8 million
Add it all up, we have $60.7 million on his residual contract, 90% of which LSU was on the hook for under the terms for early termination, rounding out to $55.08 million(60.7x0.9). If the buyout was truly for half, that totals to $27.315 million, which also saved LSU $27.315 million.
So total compensation due was $27,315,000
Looking at LSU's operating budget for 2024-25, you'll notice it's now underfunded for the fiscal year. ($26,677,823) from the General Fund, ($179,206) from SELF, ($247) from Education Excellence Fund, and ($404,586) from Intragency Transfers.
That's $27,261,862 under budget from state-sourced funds...just how sure are you that buyout didn't come out of that budget and it's not being covered up to save face?

People on this board have no idea what they're talking about when they say boosters are mad at Scott Woodward.
I might have missed where people were claiming this but I do know boosters were mad at Kelly and two of the biggest donors were rubbed the wrong way when Scott and kelly didn't come to them for $ in NIL. But Scott isn't in trouble or anything like that with boosters. There are a few BOS who are upset with Scott and mainly due to some stuff that happened last year and them being same sided as Landry. But again I have not been seeing anywhere that people were claiming the boosters were mad at Scott that is just blatantly false.

Bingo. Landry is a terrible politician going for a soundbite.
A month from now we will forget about his comments

Yes, if the government wants to emasculate the only P4 program in the state and give it FCS level funding, it can.
