You've known you were going to part ways with Pelini for a couple weeks now and you're just now vetting candidates? Seems unlikely.

Always entertaining to see people justify hiring someone who would have to go against everything they have done their entire career regarding scheme.
Mason should not be anywhere near the top of the list. And I really like the guy.
He is not the best hire for LSU.

I'm sure I'll get down-voted by those who can't have a reasonable conversation, but I think the question does have to be raised: Is the criteria for the new coaches MORE than strictly merit?
LSU just came off of a truly awful defensive season led by a former HC who seemed to have very little market demand after a lack of success (by Nebraska's expectations). That being the case, is considering a HC whose team just went 0-9 for the DC position suggest a big turnaround at the position? Particularly when one considers (as pointed out in the OP) Mason appears to run the type of scheme Ed was happy to get rid of when Aranda left?
We've all heard stories recently that the summer protests and (purported) response or lack thereof by the coaching staff may have created a deep division between the coaches and the players. Is O trying to appease the players by bringing on more black staff members? It's not as if the staff was completely white this past season. But all three coordinators were. The only seemingly definitive name we've heard to be joining the staff is Bo Davis. Now as a position coach, LSU alum, and (former) top recruiter, his addition to the staff would make sense regardless of race. But is O trying to hire at least one black coordinator? And given the likelihood they may retain E and/or promote Callaway, does that mean the black coordinator MUST be on the defensive side of the ball? Otherwise, from a strictly logical stand point even entertaining the thought of Mason as DC doesn't make a ton or senses or bring any excitement following the disaterous Pelini hire.
FWIW, I could not care less about the race of the coaches. The ONLY thing that should matter is ability. That said, we also have to acknowledge we don't live in a world where everyone feels that same way and it appears clear there was some divide in the program over racial issues this summer.

Mason's line-LB scheme is exactly what O tried to get away from. He runs a 2-gap, read and react type of D. I believe it has lots of zone, too.
It is hard to say what Mason would do with options in personnel. Vandy is not a good indicator of what he could do. Even his Stanford record may not be completely indicative.
With that said I dont think he is coming

Marcus freeman also runs a 3-4

more like 3-3-5 but I'm pretty sure its a 1-gap scheme which O wants for his DL

Tonight's news makes a bump deserved, whether we hire Mason or not

He runs multiple fronts, so it’s not like going with someone who stays in 3-4 as a base.

It's not like they handled Miles well either when they canned him.
That administration is long gone brother.
