What he has done at Wake is remarkable. I would love to see what he could do at a major program. He seems like a perfect fit at Penn State.

Maybe it has to do with him agreeing to leave once, for Arky, and then changing his mind.

Does anyone think he should have taken a chance at a job when he took WF to a BCS bowl?

Keep in mind that many of these lists & rumors are fueled by coach's agents reaching out to schools and media members.

Could be that Grobe has just decided he's good where he's at, and has told his agent as much. And schools (and the consultants they work with) know he's not interested.

Good point.

He would be a good hire for PSU, if he was open to it.

Hasn't he lost something like 20 games over past 3 seasons and not been to a bowl since 2008? Although I think they are bowl eligible this year.

I think he is a good coach, but remarkable?

I have known Grobie for 25 years. He was in the mix when Les decided to stay at LSU the first time. He came to Nashville to talk to me about LSU.

He is very content at Wake and can coach with no pressure and feels very secure. I do not think he wants to coach in the SEC. He declined any interest in Vanderbilt.

Great Coach and wonderful person...

its safer to be a "great" coach at a non-football school than to enter the SEC pressure cooker. its better to win 8-9 games a year like pat fitzgerald at northwestern than be expected to win every game, every year at an ohio st.

you must not be paying attention. he was an incredible 6-6 this year, 3-9 last year, 5-7 the year before that. 14-22 the last 3 years, yet everyone marvels at what a great coach he is. all in a shitty ACC. the coach who got run off the field against vanderbilt this year.

im sure hes a good guy and decent coach, just chaps my arse when people refer to these types of coaches as "great" coaches. les miles is vilified for only winning 11 games a year in the SEC, and this guy goes .500 and is doing a remarkable job. just doesnt make sense...

Going to a BCS game at Wake Forest is a great accomplishment. Wake has an undergrad enrollment of around 4,500... Winning 8 games a year at a place like that is great.
Les doesnt get the credit because of the situation he is in. LSU gets athletes that rival NFL teams. It looks as if LSU runs a high school offense with NFL players some times. The perception is ANYONE can win at LSU. Just 'out athlete' teams for 9 wins. Les also has had a few questionable moments that have made national headlines to make him look a little lost.
Both are good coaches. I think what Grobe has done with that program is a little less expected therefore gets a lot of credit.

exactly. this is why i said its a better career move to win 8-9 games a year at a very non traditional power. its easier. no pressure to win, red shirt everyone, never have someone leave early for the NFL, no one poaches your coaches. and were talking about the ACC. make a bowl less than half the time youre there and no one cares. make a BCS bowl and get trounced, no one cares-- youre brilliant just for making it!!

saban gets plenty of credit for winning here

i think the key in all this is recruit shitty = have less expectations = easy to surpass said low expectations

Grobe is happy at Wake for the reasons listed above; but he also makes in the neighborhood of $3M, so very few programs could even match what he's making now.

Considering we were picked to finish last in the entire ACC and most pundits thought our ceiling was 3-9...yes, it was a remarkable coaching job. We were 5 minutes away from playing for the ACC Championship after outplaying Clemson in Death Valley as huge underdogs, beat Florida State, played the hell out of Notre Dame. I'd have liked to be more competitive against Vandy but we had nothing to play for and they were playing for bowl eligibility and shite like that happens. Taking away what Grobe accomplished this year based solely on a 6-6 record would be doing a great disservice to what he actually did this year.

whoa, whoa, whoa.

he'd been there for 10 years. he didnt inherit some mess from another coach. not having the next guy ready to go is on him. just another example of the small school grading curve: suck and no one cares, be average and youre great

You do realize Grobe has won over 50% of his games at Wake Forest, right? He has the highest winning percentage of a coach at Wake since the 40's. The head coach of an NFL team (Jim Caldwell) went 26-63 here. It's not an easy job. He's a high-quality coach. Saying otherwise is just factually wrong.

hes a fine coach for your school and football team. but hes simply not a great coach. hes great for yall, but in the grand scheme of things, great coaches dont need a miraculous coaching job to win as many games as they lose.

wake may be a tough place to win, but i know he had lots of offers a few years back and chose to stay. thats fine. but dont use your plight as an excuse for his mediocrity

great coaches take the big jobs and big challenges to prove it at the highest level. nice coaches stay where theyre comfortable. again, i have no problem with his choice to do so. my problem is when people say 14-22 in the last 3 years is great. its not.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think coaches that can create - in your words - "miraculous coaching jobs" are damn good coaches in general. You don't see shitty coaches puking out miraculous coaching jobs, because they're shitty coaches.

I don't know if Grobe could succeed at a bigger school. I know he does a fantastic job here recruiting good players who can get in Wake academically (which takes away a number of potential players) and competing in the ACC most years. Our guys aren't out getting arrested and we haven't been on probation under him like other ACC schools (Miami, UNC, etc.)

He came into a bad situation at a program with no historic success and has been relatively consistent all things considered. Next year should be a good season at Wake...a lot of our best players are coming back from a team that beat every team in the Atlantic Division sans Clemson (which SHOULD have been a win).

He loves the school, makes a lot of money, and is 12 wins away from having the most wins by a coach in school history. And he's a helluva football coach. He's not Saban or Harbaugh, but he's better (and more proven) than a lot of these guys getting hired to bigger schools.
