Oh, there are still plenty who believe this. Had multiple guys at work talking about how Saban is coming back and they're working out the details

Why is Florida so confident they are getting Lane?
Kiffin's rolling at Ole Miss, but he has them maxed out. He has them in regular playoff contention, which is a huge achievement for a program that level. If he could translate that to a bigger program, that projects to annual playoff and frequent title contention. And if you look at Kiffin's arc, he's done everything to prove he isn't a fluke; makes sense he would move up now.
Penn State, Florida, and LSU were the 3 big possibilities. He doesn't seem to fit well with Penn State. LSU was the early leader, but proceeded to shite themselves with what's going on, and he may not want to get involved with that mess.
Florida cheaped out last cycle with Napier, so there's a sense they would be willing to spend more for someone more proven this time.

How the hell does Florida know what Lane does not even know yet. He is still in making a decision mode. LSU and Florida have pros and cons. The money will be there from either school. The question for Lane is what is the best fit for Lane and his family. Which school offers the best path to Natty and repeated success each year. LSU has better recruiting opportunities in that the state is ripe for picking and in state competition is non existent. Florida has better political environment, no state income tax, but they compete with a number of big name Florida schools for talent. I think Lane will be happy at either schools with his 15 million / year salary.

I don’t doubt that he may end up at Florida.
I do seriously doubt that it will be announced this weekend as has been reported.
And I’m 99.9% sure that the report that Lane isn’t going to coach OM in the playoffs is false.
Honestly, the much more likely explanation is that Ole Miss is setting Florida up to be the bad guy for this weekends game. The team and the fan base agent by is going to be out for blood. Florida might get beaten by 40.
Then, when Kiffin doesn’t take the job this weekend, the fallout of getting smashed combined with the panic of not having a deal might force the people behind the scenes to focus on the next in line.
