Why does Matt Campbell get a free pass to mediocrity because "It's Iowa State"?

A regular line on this board is that Lincoln Riley wouldn't be an impressive hire. The 53-9 record isn't impressive because he beats up on a weak Big 12 and then sharts himself in the playoff. But Matt Campbell seems to be seen as an acceptable hire with a near .500 record in that same Big 12 Riley plays in.

If Campbell is competitive its "dude look what he's done at Iowa State!" If his team falls flat on their face from pre-season top 10 to 6-6 or 7-5 like they did just this year, it's "dude it's Iowa State. That he had them in the top 10 to begin with speaks volumes." So he's got a built in excuse for his coaching failure.

2016 3-9
2017 8-5
2018 8-5
2019 7-6
2020 9-3
2021 6-5

41-33 (30-23)

Meeeeehhhhhh. I understand Iowa States history and what they are. But a coach who can make them a 7-5 bowl team doesn't sparkle as a gem of a coach.

To summarize the answer, it's because it's Iowa State.

Why do Napier idiots keep claiming the FCS (it isn’t but not far above) that is the sun belt conference is the same as a P5? Winning a conference with about 4 teams annually with above .500 records is NOTHING to brag about.
Yet “It’s Back swap USL illiterates”.

I’m not advocating one way or another for hiring him, but look at their records before he got there. They were really fricking terrible.

8 and 9 wins at Iowa State is a bit of an achievement.

Dude has never been to Ames.

Yelling at Matt Campbell while he won coach of the year in the Big 12.. 3 times.

And beat the shite out of Cristobal in the Fiesta Bowl.

So yall are willing to accept a coach floating .500 because Iowa State is historically shitty. A caterpillar can barely play limbo under that low bar.

Saban and Campbell pre-LSU resumes certainly have a lot of similarities…

-both at little brother schools
-records/resume at that first big job are very similar
-both built program to NY6-type bowl in 5 years
-both started as HC at Toledo
-both supposedly thought of highly in NFL circles and by Belichick

Saban
1990 Toledo HC
1995 Michigan State 6-5
1996 Michigan State 6-6
1997 Michigan State 7-5
1998 Michigan State 6-6
1999 Michigan State 9-2 (Citrus Bowl)

Campbell
2012-2015 Toledo HC
2016 Iowa State 3-9
2017 Iowa State 8-5
2018 Iowa State 8-5
2019 Iowa State 7-6
2020 Iowa State 9-3 (Fiesta Bowl)
2021 Iowa State 6-4

He is like Mullen was at state. Beats a few teams he shouldn't and loses to a few teams he shouldn't. Shouldn't be considered over many others.

By this standard of qualification, yall should be demanding we hire Mark Mangino. Quite possibly the greatest coach of all time.

I’m not campaigning for him but he would be a massive upgrade over Orgeron. Fickell is still the best coach available in my opinion

I don't think you do. It's really a super shitty Power 5 situation that Campbell made respectable and even dangerous.

Being the No. 2 school in a state without talent like Iowa and having to compete with OU and Texas schools is a daunting task but Campbell has done it.

If winning 9 games at Baylor got Matt Rhule an NFL job.

Winning 9 games at Iowa State should give him the presidency.

I mean shite, Gene Chizik won 3 games at ISU and they gave him the Auburn job.
