Who renegotiated the extension? Whoever it was needs to

find a new job.
I've never seen anything quite like this. We
renegotiate a contract and get NOTHING out of it, except to commit to up the termination clause by $5 Million (Miles gets $15 Million dollars, if we let him go) and pay up to $250,000.00 a year more for assistants (any raise Miles gets was already a part of his contract). The extra 2 years means nothing in the real world.
The value of a contract is based upon the type of penalty incurred, if the contract is breached; using the this as a barometer of LSU's value, the contract is worthless.
The buyout stays the same and we find ourselves in the same exact position that we were prior to all of the charades that have taken place over the last week. If Miles wasn't willing to accept a "Tuberville" type of buyout, we should have never upped the termination penalty. It should be obvious to everyone that the $6 Million buyout in Tuberville's contract will keep all of dogs off that bone; $1.25 Million won't keep any BCS school off Miles.
This is what we term a "unilateral" negotiation, which means "it goes one way". It bothers me that the LSU administration thinks so little of our university that it agreed to be held hostage. If Miles wants to go, let him go. Miles, contrary to some opinions, isn't the greatest coach in the land; he's a good coach who happens to have great talent. He is starting to make LSU look like the dud who can't get a date for the prom, and I, for one, don't believe our school should play second fiddle to anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Skip needs to stop all of his hyperbole concerning the extension, it really makes us look stupid.
Sorry for the long post; it makes me feel better!

When you negotiated all of your high-powered contracts, were you on the strong side, the weak side or were the sides equal?
I can assure you that LSU was on the weak side and Miles was on the strong side. There was no reason for Miles to give any concessions. I can't believe he didn't ask for National Championship money, win or lose. He most certainly would have received it.

I've been involved in negotiating hundreds of contracts for extreme amounts of money involving parties like: Goldman Sachs, The British Ministry of Defense, Bellsouth, The Neville Brothers, The National Government of Nigeria, DeutscheTelecom (the national telephone company of Germany), T.J. Weaver (a country & western star), Natick (the R&D Center for the U.S. Army), Cisco Systems, and more.
IF this is true, then you should know that a contract can't provide more than the parties to the contract are willing to provide.

exactly, furthermore Miles stated he was happy with the current escalator clauses for the SECCG win and the BCSCG win so there was no need to change them. As far as the buyout, Miles said he isn't leaving, he negotiated in good faith and if he does leave he looks like a liar and he personally owes LSU $1.25mm.
Perhaps Tubby's buyout is so high because he is a proven liar who doesnt negotiate in good faith (see Ole Miss).

I guess the administration subscribes to your position and that's why they did what they did.
I don't believe LSU was in a weak position. Do you really think that we couldn't replace Miles with someone of equal, or better, talent?
We'll see what happens. LSU will put a team on the field next year with, or without, Miles.

Well there is already talk of raising ticket prices for the "nothing" that he gets for winning at each level ...

I hope you're right. My point was that the buyout wasn't a problem for UM before and it's not a problem now.

Of course we could. Most employees can be replaced. However, they likely believed that it was very important to keep Miles so that LSU does not appear to be a place that cannot keep coaches. Stability (or the appearance of it) is apparently very important to the powers that be at LSU. Keeping the status quo was the goal.

why would it be a problem? It isn't their problem at all, it Miles and the UM booster club's problem to deal with, not UM's.
the buyout certainly wouldnt stop them from talking to Miles

What about Miles at Ok. State?

what about him? did he make a "leaving in a pine box" type statement while at OSU? I dont remember him saying anything pro or con about staying at OSU when LSU was talking to him. Matter of fact I seem to remember he was very quiet about staying at OSU when he was talking to Bertman.
Also, LSU asked for permission to speak to Miles and they were turned down by OSU. So maybe it was OSU that was not acting in good faith? Miles had a $1mm buyout with OSU for his contract so he is no stranger to these things apparently.

one thing that is hurting um's hiring of a new coach is that they are not willing to step up and pay the number and this might might also include the asst coaches.
they have the attitude of -- we are michigan!
in the past alabama, lsu have gone though this and u see what is happening @ arkansas
if michigan wanted the guy from rutgers - they should have done what emmert did when he hired saban - ask what would it take?

Well, well, well, what do have to say now?
The speculation of Miles to UM is now back in full force. Why? Because the buyout didn't change.
The media isn't as stupid as some would like to believe.
This is just amazing.
Saban and now Miles. Who would have ever thought we'd be in this position again?

O'keefe did all the negotiating...O'keefe is a very smart man.

I don't look at it as a renegotiated contract, just an amended one. Both sides were happy with the basic structure of the original contract. How in the world would this make LSU look like we’re playing second fiddle? We went out and made it happen. Would you rather look like Michigan, Arkansas, or Alabama (last year)? I think LSU looked really good after Miles agreed to the new contract.

He sure did. Go check for yourself.
He made the comment: "I love this place and intend to here for a long time." BTW, we was negotiating with LSU at the time.
