When Saban hired Jimbo

Jimbo had about the same experience as Gonzales or maybe less.
I don't think Gonzales would be a bad move.

Fisher was a big time hire when Saban pulled him. I don't know how people forget this. He was one of the highest paid OCs in the country at the time.

Technically, Jimbo was an OC at one point before. But virtually the same.
1991–1992 Samford (OC)
1993–1998 Auburn (QBs coach)

It's a little risky, but isn't necessarily bad in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken, he's well regarded and considered a rising star. He very well might succeed-- I'm sure you could find as many failures as success stories with any hot young coach making a move to the next level. One successful example off the top of my head (like him or not): Bob Stoops became a very successful head coach at OU after being Spurrier's DC-- that was a huge risk that paid off.
From what I know, Gonzales is a good, young, energetic coach who has had a lot of success, and based on that I would be okay with giving him the promotion... the only thing that I've seen that is remotely a concern is that Urban Meyer didn't give him the promotion and gave it to Adazzio(sp?) instead. I am curious why-- I've seen the speculation on here, but unless Urban says it, then it's just speculation.

As long as we would hire a pretty damn good QB coach I wouldn't be against Gonzo as OC at all.

Regardeless of what is happening now, or what happened since, Jimbo was a huge hire at OC. He was a big name, especially in the SEC, and had many other opportunities.
When he was at LSU, I always wanted him to leave for a smaller school and come back to LSU when Saban inevitably left.

not only was he OC in cinci, i'm pretty sure he was like de facto OC under Tater Tot at AU since tater was an offensive guy. great thread
