What's so good about Dwayne Walker?

Bear with me here. I realize he's a pretty popular candidate, stemming back from last offseason. Looking at his stats this season, his defense was ranked pretty poorly in Scoring Defense and Total YPG. I'm not incredibly familiar with UCLA football, so could there be some explanation for the regression of the defense from 2007 -> 2008 that still allows for Dwayne Walker to be considered a top flight defensive coordinator?

Tennessee had a bad offense too and you don't see their defensive stats like UCLA's.

ucla had a decent pass rush and a couple of good DB's, but no LB's or interior DL to shout about.
The bRuins are the 11th ranked D in the country against the pass, but you can run on them at will.
Walker's a good coach. It's just, well, ucla sucks.

Can he put together the most feared and most violent, ferocious and furious attacking stop unit in college football if he were to come to LSU?

With the talent at LSU, it's almost criminal how that defense has underperformed. LSU is 17th in the nation against the run. Which isn't bad, until you figure out all you have to do is put a good WR in single coverage and he'll get no help deep.

I don't just want someone that can do a better job than Malleveto. Plenty of folk can do that.
I want someone who can field the most violent and the most feared defensive unit in college football. I want someone who will field a defense that dictates the entire game. I want a defense that affects the QB tremendously.
Guess we'll just have to find out for ourselves.

Agreed- I want our players to get after the football. However's got it, they're gonna get hit hard. I want our secondary to make plays, too. One of my biggest issues with Mallveto is that we could not force turnovers on defense. We need picks in the secondary and our DL and LB's need to be able to force more fumbles.

Yep. But that can be a little bit easier said than done. It starts with a d-coordinator who rules with an iron fist; a fire and brimstone leader who has experience and knows what it takes to succeed in this league.
Just in general, that person has to be a good evaluator of athletes and just as much or even more important than scheme is finding out what our players can and can't do.
We need a coordinator who is multiple scheme wise, who doesn't limit himself.
And in addition to that, we need strong leadership on the defensive side of the ball. We need a group of leaders who lead by example and set good practice habits. All of that is what we didn't have this year.

that was always the thing with bo's D
it was predicated on getting turnovers, but it was off and on in that regard. we absolutely sucked at it in 2005 and 2008
i don't know if we were that great in 2006 either

05 was much like 06 with the TO thing, and I remember Bo saying prior to 07 that he wanted to do a better job that season.

Walker is a damn good coach. He's coached in the n.f.l. with washington and the N.Y. giants. He has performed well at u.c.l.a., Rick N., thought so much of him that he kept him on the staff when he took over.
New coaches, lack of talent, and a horrific Offense had an affect on his defense. U.C.L.A. was down to their 3rd or 4th string qb.
If you were good the years before and had a tough season, does this mean you forgot how to coach? Does it mean tubberville is no longer a good coach?

Anybody have a time of possession stat for UCLA over the course of the season? How much time did their defense spend on the field?

His D didn't give up 60 to BYU?
I don't know how much of that 59 was the D's fault, but i don't remember seeing a bunch of interceptions returned for TD's...really don't remember that many picks being thrown at all, but my attention was elsewhere during said game (I was watching another game at a local bar that had the gameplan...BYU-UCLA was in my peripheral vision). Anywho...hard to forget that score.
