You can't blame UCLA's poor defensive stats on a bad offense. LSU's defense outperformed UCLA's in almost every category:
To despell the notion of time of possession being a significant factor in UCLA's poor performance, here are the facts...
UCLA's time of possession was 30:07 per game (LSU's was 30:11 per game). Both teams ranked in the middle of the pack.
UCLA had 19 turnovers to LSU's 16 (both at the back of the pack)
UCLA had 21 sacks to LSU's 27.
3rd down conversion (defense) for UCLA was 37.2% (LSU's was 32.1%).
UCLA's defense gave up 29 pts/game (LSU's 25.9 pts/game).
UCLA's defense gave up 337 yds/game (LSU's 326 yds/game).
I don't think Walker is a tremendous upgrade over what we already have.

He fills a minority slot.

meh, chavis is not a great coordinator. he's been good for most of his career, with the exception of a few really bad years, but he's never had a great season. in all of his years as DC he's never had one year as good as any of pelini's 3 D's at LSU. walker has the potential to be better than chavis but he's not a proven commodity, it's a riskier hire
1996, 2005 and 2008 were all top 5 in Total Defense. 1998 was a National Title. The team went 45-5 from 95-98 in his first 4 years as DC. He's had plenty that are BETTER.
