That was one of the rumors. That he was going to leave Notre Dame for the bayou...I know it seems ridiculous but there was also the rumor that Lou Holtz was going to come- he had Arkansas at a high level. Never happened. Bobby Bowden was actually thinking about it until they beat us at home and he decided to stay at FSU.

I don't know who it will be but it is fun to argue over who might come and then realize how far off we all were.

Update: Well we just got notre dames coach- unbelievable

LSU was not what it is now. This coaches all looked at LSU as potential. Sure McClendon won games but LSU wasnt looked upon as it is now. Bowden may have been the closest to coming. Imagine had he did. Now LSU is one of the top jobs in the country. Sure, some coaches will most likely use us for a pay raise, but a lot of them have serious interest in this job. Should be a wild next 6-7 weeks

Howdy whipper snapper.

Back then Notre Dame wasn't the boogeyman that it seemingly became. Especially with the old school Catholics. I remember dove hunts where all you heard was the ND game on the radio, and the ND replay on Sunday mornings. Still the 1971 game in TS was wild, totally nuts.

Laughable. None of those coaches would have come to Baton Rouge.

Bobby Bowden was absolutely coming until they beat us in Mac’s final season

Lou and Spurrier both wanted to come here but we didn’t offer.

All 4 were pipe dreams. Wasn't happening, ever!

It's convenient to say this but truth be told not a single top tier coach has ever signed with LSU. All I care about is getting a decent well respected guy who can run a football operation. We don't need some coaching wizard. Not with the talent in our state and recruiting base.

Bowden was momentarily interested and by momentarily it was like a weekend. He was concerned that if he had a rough season or two the fans and boosters would call for his head and he was not confident that Dietzel would have his back.

We tend to get overconfident in our attractiveness. Yeah we may be pretty with all types of great attributes, but when you are a bitch and batshit unreasonable you run people off.

You mean real actual practicing Catholics before ND became another liberal cesspool of a university?

Do you think ND would be competitive for national championships with a team composed of only real actually practicing Roman Catholics?

Back in the day Florida State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Miami were considered national powers. Today is not the same…at all…
