Wondering what your opinions . . .

You think Les really thought Malleveto would work out OR if he knew it was flawed from the start but ran out of other options?

You've made the leap to assume that he has figured out there is a problem.

no..i think he tried to bring in a coordinator last season and it didnt work out...CO-DC was a last option

after negotiations broke down he didnt have any other options...put all his eggs in 1 basket

i think he knew all along he would eventuallyhave to hire a new DC and was hoping that these guys like pelini, could carry on pelini's system just enough for LSU to get by

we had our co-DCs hired for a LOOOOONG time last year behind closed doors. everyone praised miles for his "sly" move, giving him more in-home visits. i cannot buy the, "there were no options" excuse b/c miles seemed to have a plan in place for Maleveto

I am doing some research but I am lead to believe that Malveto wasn't always the plan from the get-go...

But I think it was a convenient move for him...not rock the boat, no need to bring in a new face to change things that seemed to be working ok.

SFP, I seem to remember a thread where you and I caught flack for chastising the Co-DC choice, and questioning the BCS Champ HC.

It's complicated because Miles was seeking the Michigan job behind the scenes.

We know this how?

The fact that for the first time during CLM's tenure at LSU, he was observed by the media (until practices were closed) overseeing the defense during practices last August, something he never did with Bo, indicates he knew he was in trouble with the Co-D move. By that point, there was little he could do but try to get through the season and then fix it.

thats not exactly what im getting at...the thing is...if you are going to hire a DC, you have to hire someone that you would assume would produce to a degree to thatwhich we desire

the question then becomes not how many options there were, but how many Muschamp-like options there were..im not sure how many Tenuta's and muschamps there were out there by the time it came to hiring last season...so i think instead of just hiring a DC to hire one, meaning hiring a medicore guy that would do just enough to keep his job a couple of years they went with the CO DC option so they would not be tied down in a sense, thinking they could act as transition coaches if necessary but as it turns out Co-DCs<<<<medicore

ETA: and by transition i mean..miles assumed they could carry on a pelini scheme to enough degree for LSU to get by

andby all eggs in 1 basket, i mean it was either we get Muschamp or we get stuck with malveto

I agree completely that Les made one push for a DC, and then went straight to Malleveto.

Although my source within the UT program says that Muschamp has not been contacted by LSU since he left for Auburn.

Shhh, there are many here on TD and other LSU fans, that think LM chose LSU over Mich. They think that he was offered the gig, during his Q&A with the UM folks.

Don't ruin their fantasy!

Les was loyal to us and turned down his dream job. We need to be loyal to him no matte how many five and six loss season's he delivers. Afterall we would have loved to have only five or six losses in the Curly days.

That about sums it up?

I believe this may very well be closer to the truth than anything else. After he wasn't able to match UT's HC when MB retires offer to Muschamp, CLM, not without viable reasons, passed on Tenuta and rolled the dice hoping he could get by for a season with Co-D's until he could position himself to bring in a DC for the 2009 season worthy, if you will, of a successful, high profile CFB program like LSU.

Then came the dismissal of RP, Hatch's concussion and subsequent season-ending leg injury leaving him with only his inexperienced third and fourth string QBs, JL and JJ (whom CLM planned to red shirt initially), coupled with the lack of senior leadership, especially on defense.

Yeah, this is the conclusion I've come to terms with.

No, it doesn't come near summing it up for me. Les Miles may not have been my first choice for LSU's HC - I much prefer hard-azz defensive-minded HC's in the SEC - but I'm damn sure not going to glory in CLM's failure with the Co-DC debacle. Nor do I buy the bullsh*t rampant on TD that he's a damn idiot who lucked into a job at LSU and fell into team who managed to coach itself into three 10 win seasons and a SECC and the BCSNC.

Nor do I believe CLM is or ever was stupid enough not to see early on the Co-DC get-by was a huge mistake and that he didn't start planning at some point in the season to rectify his big mistake.

I'll critique, bitch about play-calling and how bad the Co-DC mess turned out to be among other things, but, again, I'll be damned if I'll ever glory in the failure of any HC at LSU ... because to do so is to glory in the downfall of the LSU sport that guy is coaching.

I think everyone should take a walk way back down memory lane to the Gene Stallings tenure at 'Bama. Even almost right up 'til late in the season the year he won that national championship - and old-line 'Bama diehard fans remember this all too well - the alumni and the fans bitched, pissed, moaned and ran him down as HC at every turn.

I doubt there was a more delicious private moment for Gene Stallings than when he coached 'Bama to its first national championship since Bear ... and then he promptly walked away from Alabama that year after he won it all.

Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.

Really? That's curious because that's not what was coming out of Ann Arbor or NE Ohio throughout that time. Quite the contrary.

FTR, CLM was never going to take the UM job if it meant having to look over his shoulder day in and day out with Lloyd Carr a permanent fixture in the UM Athletic Department (he's already caused RR no measure of misery in that capacity ... although RR's comment about UM fans needing to get a life and his failure to pay "proper" homage to the "storied" UM traditions hasn't helped him mesh well with alumni and fans, either).

CLM wasn't T Boone's pick at OSU because he wanted an Okie State man. T Boone preferred Gundy from the get-go because he was Okie's QB in '88 and an Okie grad. CLM was in an untenable situation with Gundy locking horns with him at every turn, knowing he had T Boone as his personal security blanket. CLM wasn't about to leave LSU and find himself having to put up with a bitter, back-stabbing Lloyd Carr at UM.

There's little worse in the workaday world than having to go in to work - especially as many hours as CFB coaches put in - and put up with staff conflict day in and day out. That's a pretty miserable situation ... and it's one CLM just wasn't willing to endure at UM with the forced to resign Carr in perpetual residence, no matter how much CLM reveres the memory of his mentor, Bo S.
