I would say a little of both. If he thought it wouldn't work out he wouldn't have promoted them. But yeah, I could see where they wouldn't have been the first option.

Ummm...no. These arguments are funny to me because everyone seems to want to imply that we've been losing for years. Those of us who still support our coach just realize that it's been ONE bad year, and that hopefully the appropriate changes will take place. If the "season's" part does become a reality I'll be changing my tune. Until then, one bad year that included transitions at QB and the defensive staff will not change my opinion.

The truth is the AD and Carr were never going to consider Miles. This is why the AD claimed he was on a "boat" sailing without cell phone access when asked why he didn't contact Miles when he was thought to be out of the MNC hunt. As much as Miles didn't like the thought of Carr being a part of the program, he did in fact put out feelers for the job.

At the same time, he was satisfied with his current job - and would only leave for the right situation. Whether UM was that right situation was up in the air...hence the feelers. His desire to be the coach at UM is stronger than his desire to be the coach at LSU - and I don't blame him for that. But the talks never got that far because he was blocked by the people controlling the hire - but that doesn't mean he wasn't pursuing the job.

The feelers he put out went unrequited, and on top of that his candidacy was actively sabotaged with false leaks by Carr and cronies.

I disagree.

I think Miles wanted to go to Mallory. I'm not saying it was his first choice, but unless he found someone he couldn't pass on, Mallory was Miles' guy. To think that the defending NC could not have found a DC is ridiculous.

Miles had a lot of faith in Mallory, IMO. It was a huge error in judgement.

Probably right - it's how it looked to me last year. Trouble is, this year it's starting to really look the same way. He's wasting time, nobody is named, no hints, just rumors. Then what? When the bowl is over, nobody worth being an LSU DC is left standing out there, and we get Mallory. Or Peveto. And then Miles' tenure clock starts ticking for real.
