Did they meet Rooney rule in a week

He should have got the job last year, but I guess Kraft felt he owed Mayo a year. Vrabel just had to wait it out for a year. Perfect fit for a good coach. Great hire by New England.

Yeah they interviewed Byron Leftwhich and Pep Hamilton in person earlier this week to fulfill the requirement
Bad process by the pats imo but ended with a great result

Well just 1 time. The rule is 2 external in person candidates.
They requested Aaron Glenn as well but he declined, likely knew Vrabel had it sewed up a month ago

Absolutely perfect hire. Jerod Mayo was a mistake, but having him basically ensured a tank year, so they have a top 5 pick. They wouldn't have had that high pick with Vabrel this year.

Not in a week, in a day. Interviewed both Hamilton and Leftwich two days after firing Mayo.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Bears and Jets kept coming back to him but sounds like everyone knew this was happening from day 1.
Vrabel apparently told Brady he was going to NE when the raiders fired Pierce and Brady called so they didn’t end up even requesting
That hall of fame event is gonna be something to look back at for years if he is great in NE

They actually hired their Rooney last year and it was a disaster

Fantastic hire. I've always been a fan of some of the subtle things he does a coach like time management, creating chances for an extra possession, etc. He's a very astute guy with a keen understanding of the game even though he looks like a meat head.

He gets the Bill Belicheck comparisons for obvious reasons but he’s really like Bill Parcells reincarnated in a lot of ways
Gonna be interesting have that type of personality leading the team for the first time in 25 years

I’m not trying to get into a debate about if the Rooney rule is good or not but in cases like this where the organization wants a certain coach and the coach wants to join that team why waste everyone’s time on a dog a pony show?
I probably started something….sorry in advance lol.

On the flip side, regardless of the validity or thoughts on the rule itself, if a team has to follow these rules anyway, it’s really silly and a bad organizational process to not take those interviews seriously or earnestly
As mentioned im ecstatic with Vrabel, but every team should interview a wide net regardless and take each interview to make relationships, gain more knowledge on what is happening outside the building, and possibly hire that person as a HC. It’s a benefit to the org. Pats ended up in the spot they have been in by being as insular as possible with their front office and coaching staffs.
Being so flippant about skirting the rules will only end up icing you out from potentially good candidates down the road, either at HC or for other staff roles down the line. It cost them a chance to interview Aaron Glenn, which they wouldn’t have hired but 2 hours talking ball with Aaron Glenn is going to lead to good discussions, thoughts and start a relationship that can be useful down the road.
In this case there was more urgency and they needed the in persons completed in order to be able to offer Vrabel quickly, but it was still not a great process to get there with the current process
I also think the rules about assistants on playoff teams are more of a negative effect on the cycle than the Rooney rule is. Think the league should figure out something with the timeline to allow an open window for the playoff team candidates to interview in person.
