This is a little surprising. Dan has it pretty good at MSU right now. Making 4.5 million a year and no championship expectations from the fan base. He can win 8 or 9 games a year and the fans will be happy. That ain't happening at Tennessee

This would be fine if mullen was in his 60s.

I'll never understand this mindset Nick Saban could've stayed at MSU and won 8 games every year and they would've been happy, but the goal shouldn't be to win 8 games or win just enough to keep a job. These dudes are competitive as hell, and I'm sure he believes he's one of the best coaches in CFB but is handcuffed by States limitations as a program.
[/quote]

Yup. For his age he's maxed out at msu, and if he has a drive to prove it to himself he can be a legendary cfb coach then nowhere better than at UT. Not going to happen at msu. UT is out of the program chernobyl from the fulmer/kiffin debacle, so yeah.

Only thing to me though is how much he is getting paid now. Not sure he is worth 6-7mil, so he will definitely need to be doing it for personal accomplishment reasons as currie better not be getting into a salary war with msu.

Tn is going to have a hard time being nationally relevant again. In the 90s they were able to recruit well due to their large stadium and thus they got a lot more Tv exposure and $$$. Now that everyone is on TV a lot, they lost a huge recruiting edge.

Since all SEC schools get a lot of money from TV contracts, all of us can spend money (perhaps too much) on coaches. MSU can match Tn on money unless you go to a crazy number that is far more than his worth -- and going to that crazy number would get any coach a short leash at their new school.

Finally, Mullen has MSU poised to start the season top 15 next year (with basically everyone returning) and can make another run at the CFP -- Tn is a multi year rebuild.

Does the IAS have a Knoxville Org? Asking the real questions. Google says closest Scientology Celebrity Centre is in Knoxville.

I think he had a clear goal to elevate to a bigger program and then step up to the NFL. Which is exactly what he did. Could he have decided to stay and build MSU into a powerhouse? Probably.

The other side of that is MSU wasn't willing to match LSU's pay. And LSU has the best recruiting territory in the country, while the Michigan area is barron and scrapped over by multiple schools.

It's almost like you're arguing that MSU is a better job and the program ceiling is higher than it would be at TN.

Bless your heart. You just needed a Bert gift to beat an Arky team that's already quit. I have a feeling MSU fans would be feeling a lot differently had Bert not gifted you that game.

CFP?!?!? Please tell me where you see 11-1 on this schedule.

You have a guaranteed L @ Bama. Not easy to talk CFP with a game you absolutely won't win on your schedule.

9-3 would be an amazing accomplishment

This needs to be stickied. Ha! Especially when aggies get all small man syndrome acting like UT cares their stadium holds 50-100 or so more people. As if UT cares at this point as we broke the 100k mark back in the 90s. It's like bragging about marrying the hot chick from HS to the guy who took her virginity, and still hammers her out whenever he wants. Ha.

mich/UT....penn st are the OGs of the arm race.

To be fair, we are about to be 9-3 this year and will have a much better team next year, and we swap UGA on the schedule for Florida. 10+ wins should be the floor.

We get AU at home, honestly, 11 wins is achievable.

Here is one for you, Mullen will not be the next coach at TN.

That's nice and all but when he takes a job at a program with unrealistic expectations and he doesn't meet them he'll be out of a job in a couple years ala Jimmy Mac at Florida.

Jimmy Mac would still have a job if he didn't lie about death threats and if he could field a half arse offense as an offensive coach. Don't think that falls under unrealistic expectations

And even if he were to get fired by Tennessee in a couple years, school on MSUs level would be falling over themselves to give him another job so what does he lose?

4 years at UT plus 3-4 years to rebuild at the next gig. 7-8 years is a lot to gamble with, especially given he has far better talent lined up for the next 4-5 years than he's ever had to play with.

Cute post. Also TN isn’t that far away as Butch recruited fairly decent so it won’t take them long

More money and a better city to live in to possibly raise your career profile by 10 fold

That's a gamble I'd take every time.

Mullen coaches with a defense first mindset. You need elite LB and DL talent.

On offense you need a very specific type of QB with multiple years in the offense. He also likes to have 10+ WR's catching TD's, which is something he hasn't gotten completely rolling yet at State.

I know UT has recruited well, it still takes a few years for him to get things set. State had the best QB in MS highschool history coming in when Mullen got here, but things didn't start rolling until Dak came along because Russell just wasn't the right QB for Mullen's offense.

Just a little of what to expect if he's your next coach.

Sorry but MSU is not in the position to just assume home wins over programs like Florida and Auburn. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment. This isn't isolated to MSU either.

@Kansas State
@Kentucky
@LSU
@Bama
@OM

looks like a 3-2 type of road slate to me assuming MSU is better next year.

I'm not saying State won't have a good team but talk of CFP is ludicrous.

If he leaves it won't be over money. He's going to get paid what the market thinks he's worth at either school.

He's 45ish right?? Yall would be more than happy to get a 55ish y/o Mullin back in 10yrs. Any reasonable msu fan will remember he left yall in a good spot, and he just needed to test out the next level.

Msu fans melt whenever mullin comes up as going somewhere is getting predictable, but also very fun. Ha!!

He will leave when he is offered a better job just like Stricklin and Collins. He has been interviewing for jobs for years for a reason.

I'm not saying it will be because of money, but either way he's going to get a raise on his current deal so that makes the risk a little less of one

Have lost to UK once in the last like 9 years. Beat LSU by 30 this year, they graduate Guice, and last I checked O is coming back. OM, seriously?

Have to be stupid not to assume a loss at Bama but otherwise I see 4-1 on that road schedule.

AU at home should be the pivotal game of the season.
