Let's start with Dan Mullen, who is firmly on Tennessee’s short-list, multiple sources have told VolQuest.com.

As we’ve noted on the board throughout the last few days, we expect Tennessee to really ramp up its search in the coming days, and the timing to formally talk to Mullen is the earliest for any current head coach currently employed. Mississippi State plays on Thanksgiving, meaning Tennessee could get a face-to-face with Mullen on Friday. This is something we’ll follow very closely over the next few days.

On a related note, multiple recruits that are or have been committed to Tennessee have heard from the staffs at Memphis and Mississippi State over the last week. The recruits we have spoken to have wanted to keep their name out of the limelight pertaining to the contact, but they were led to believe that both Mullen and Mike Norvell were in play to possibly land in Knoxville and wanted to begin forming a relationship just in case. It’s not surprising but certainly interesting with very little time until the early signing period (Dec. 20-22).

This would be a great hire IMO. I would be very interested to see what he can do at a bigger program

Obviously he has a reason to check into it. Leaving msu you for UT would be way better than him going anywhere else. Especially to lsu.
Knoxville is a nice small city, so if safe family enviroment is wanted then it's not a bad choice.

Would be funny if he went to UT, and asked why he would leave msu and he justs says "the cowbells". Ha!!

It would be kind of fricked up to use Missippi state or Memphis's time and resources to recruit a kid you know you don't have a shot with at the current school, because you might need to recruit if you end up at Tennessee

I know shite prolly happens all the time, but it's slimey as hell

So volquest isn't actually saying that he's interviewing? Just that he could because we play Thursday? Holy misleading thread titles Batman.

It's not really a step up job from where he is at now.... I guess the only reason could be that the east is easier....

Settle down, skirpnasty. One of the mods posted on the board that Mullen is meeting with Currie Friday. I'm not copying and pasting everything the mods post on the pay board.

What I just posted was the actual article that is now on the front page

State has way better facilities and he has Mississippi to himself in recruiting for the foreseeable future? And the best team he's ever fielded coming back next year with continually improving incoming talent?

He's making 5 mil a year and about to get a raise. And as hot as his name is now, it's going to be that much hotter after next season.

Honestly, there are a lot of reasons for him to stay and very few for him to leave.

I would try to be excited about Mullen, but the fact that his record against ranked teams is worse than Lyle's is a hard pill for me to swallow.

Yes, I know it's MSU.

Have you seen our training facilities? They are all brand new, stadium is 2 years off of a complete addition and renovation.

Literally everything has been added since he got here. Not many programs currently have nicer facilities than we do. The school has really went all in in that aspect.

Would be a solid hire. I'd be curious to see if his recruiting would improve at a place like Tennessee and how much.

Mullen is a very solid coach that has some concerning flaws that are attributed by almost everyone to "being at State" (recruiting ceiling, record against Top 25 teams, etc). He'd clearly be better at both of those things at Tennessee, but the story of his tenure there would be how much better IMHO.

Would clearly be the best Tennessee hire post-Fulmer.

More fertile recruiting ground with a higher ceiling program. He's maxed out at Miss State. More money and prestige. Etc etc

They should build him a statue in Starkville for the miracle job he's pulled off, Tennessee is a nice step up for him.

Oh give me a break. No reasonable sec fan would put msu in the same ballpark as UT. It would be like saying lsu isnt a step up. The sec's big 6 are all in the same boat as a good place for any coach to have as their final landing spot if a good fit for their families etc.

I can't believe Mullen wants to be Gruden's OC.

I think Mullen to Tennessee is not only good for Mullen but would be better for Tennessee than getting Gruden.

What Mullen has done at Miss State is practically a miracle.
