...funny how many want him back now. The derision from Knoxville over LSU hiring him was astounding.

In their defense, a great deal of the LSU fanbase wasn't too excited with him either.
Just didn't have the talent in those last few years at UT I guess.

I actually remember a lot of LSU fans I talked to liked the hire. Then a ton of UT fans hit the web and started their "Wait until 3rd and Chavis"
I was actually excited because of what we had before him mallveto and he was rumored to come with orgeron who is probably regretting that decision daily.

Ehh...I was always a shite rolls down hill guy. Get him away from Fulmer and Third and Chavis subsides. It looked like it did. But every once and a while, you'll see LSU go back into it.
That's why I'm willing to let Chaney continue being OC. I've got a feeling the micro-manager Dooley was a lot to blame for some playcalling. Like Third and Chavis, a bit of it is philosophy from the HC.
edit: Micro-managing was Dooley's biggest flaw. If he just would've let the Chaney handle the offense and probably timeouts, he might have won a few.

And they were as dumb as the UT fans that were happy to see him gone.
His last year the offense at UT was putrid. It was 3 and out every other series. By the end of the 3rd quarter the defense was exhausted. Yeah they gave up some plays, but they were still very good.

Chavis has total autonomy over the defense...Miles even pokes his head into a defensive mtg and he gets run off.

Whether or not you appreciated Chavis should be a litmus test of your football knowledge as a UT fan. Most fans main criticism of him was one game from 1995 or 2001, completely ignoring the literal 100+ good games.

The first half of that season is his worst job. By the end of the year we were shutting down the National Champs in Atlanta.
I can see that criticism, but compared to his body of work it seems petty.

That game was the one that made me excited to have him.
Even the 2001 SECCG y'all had us going until Davey got hurt and Mauck, who had never played, came in and took the world by surprise with his ability to tuck it and run.

Sabanocchio was especially prone to say this.
Looking back now with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, it's astounding to realize that Monte Kiffen's best college defense statistically was his very first at Tennessee with Chavis's players.
And even at that, it was in some ways worse than Chavis' last defense at Tennessee, with many of the same players. Chavis's last UT D gave up only 16.8 ppg, compared with Kiffen's 21 ppg.
Add to that, Chavis' first defense at LSU, with none of the players his recruits, was a vast improvement from the one fielded by the co-coordinators. And it gave up only 16 ppg, again compared with Tennessee's 21 ppg.
Just sayin', but it's quite obvious who the better DC is in colloge.
