Just reflecting this morning - why did Tommy Bowden not ever return to coaching after his resignation from Clemson in 2008?

Even his idiot brother Terry eventually got back in the game. Was Tommy - who always appeared to be the brightest and most talented of the extended Bowden clan - blackballed for some reason? Was he so burnt out that he resisted the temptation of the ridiculously high salaries even at the lower levels of the FBS (he made only $300k his final season at Clemson; Terry averaged >$400k a season over his 7 years at Akron)?

He’s 65 now, so I’m guessing its too late, but he was still pretty young when he walked away 11 years ago. Did he ever put his name out there since then?

Speaking of Terry Bowden, after going down a coaching tree rabbit hole, I learned today that he's a Graduate Assistant on Clemson's staff.

Wild stuff.

Because he was an absolutely terrible football coach.

You don’t amass 72 wins at Clemson by being an “absolutely” terrible coach.

Yeah, saying hes terrible is a bad take.

I can name a dozen or more HCs who were objectively worse coaches than Bowden who have gotten work in the past decade.

There must be another reason.

Probably what you see is what you get: he just didn't want to coach anymore.

This is the most obvious answer - but it almost seems too obvious.

I can’t grasp the concept that someone who grew up eating and breathing college football, who literally spent his entire life around CFB coaches, would decide never to practice his chosen profession again after his only career setback. Especially knowing that he could easily double his lifetime earnings with one five year deal at even a mid-major.

Not to mention the guys fired from high profile gigs who are older than him (Mack Brown, Herm Edwards and Butch Davis) who are currently roaming the sidelines and clearing 7 figure salaries.

He was fired for failing to live up to expectations, but I’m not aware of any scandals involving the program that would preclude him making a comeback in the past dozen years.

Still doesn’t add up.

I read an article about him a few years ago that said he was holding out for really good jobs and wasn't going to take anything less.

Basically he liked pseudo retirement and was only going to come back for a good job, which wasn't going to happen. Given the time that has passed since he's been a head coach, a middling G5 program is about the next he could probably do at this point.
