I honestly don't know. Weatherbie did a good job but had just couldn't finish out a couple seasons to win the conference. Berry was hired away to Miami, that says something when a coach at ULM is hired on by a Miami. To me it was just time to have some new blood.

That's a terrible hire. This dude was 5-35 at Army. He spent one year at Miami and then went to UNLV. The dude was out of work because UNLV's whole coaching staff was fired. This guy just hit the jackpot while ULM stepped in a pile of dogshit.

He coached QB Kyle Wright...look how that turned out...this is not an upgrade.

I have no idea how Berry will do. All I know is he did a good job while at ULM and it was time for Weatherbie to go. Other than that

I do hope his first order of business is to retain the DC.

Coaching at Army is a trap. He almost won a championship at Illinois State, got suckered into a HC job at Army, and did great for ULM. If Miami wouldn't have been on the downswing when he got there, he would stayed longer.

If Reffett will stay. He only makes 65000. He could get a DC job at a Texas high school and make more than that. He won't be around much longer unless they give him a raise. Bobby Staub is a freakin moron. This won't excite anybody.

This is one of the least justifiable hires I have ever seen. I fail to see how ULM fans could put up with this.

Army is not a trap. Air Force and Navy both have good programs with the same circumstances Army plays under. Illinois State was 1AA a few years ago so Berry was able to get D-1 players to transfer and play immediately. ULM just set itself back 10 years. They might as well go ahead and drop back down. There will be more people at Carroll games than at ULM.

Not really. He was hired by Larry Coker.

Berry's record is mixed. He has some experience coaching in Louisiana so that should help and he did a pretty good job when he was an assistant at ULM. He has failures as an assistant at Miami and a HC at Army. Yet he did well as HC at Illinois State. In my opinion, ULM exchanged an apple for an apple. I don't think Berry is any more of a coach or has a better record than Weatherbie.

This change will do nothing to stir excitement about ULM football. The only thing that may create excitement is for Berry to win. But even if he does win, I'm not sure the support for ULM football will change given the enormous apathy.

Well, I guess we'll see.

Very well said. I just posted similar statements on the Monroe newspaper website. Berry may prove us all wrong, I hope so. But the bottom line is he creates no buzz or excitement. IMO we needed someone totally new to the university. Someone with a known name. This hire will do nothing to bring back the alumni/boosters that have quit donating. He will have to have a couple of good seasons, probably winning seasons, in order to prove his worth and bring back the fans. As an alumni, I am not pleased with this hire. Hope he proves me wrong.

ULM seems to have an obsession about former service academy coaches

These guys, along with Berry, were apparently the finalists for the job:

Steve Farmer
Bob Trott
Troy Reffett
Todd Bradford
Joe Robinson
Mark Hudspeth

Not exactly a stellar list.

They might as well have put me on that list.
