I can understand if the only issue were about human natures and in that case half the convicts might come out with more personal integrity than Kiffin but this is about long term view in D1- BCS - SEC school.
My thoughts exactly. People here are in love with the guy because they are from North Louisiana and what not, but if LSU hired a guy who went 17-20 in the WAC, the TD servers would melt.

You are smarter than this, aren't you? Has anyone said he will be a good coach ONLY because he is a good person? Absolutely not. But integrity can be a benefit when it comes to dealing with players, recruits, parents, coaches, admins, etc... But that is just a bonus, some of his other qualities are:
1) fantastic attention to detail
2) great organizational skills(being in charge of Tech's athletic dept. will help him be able to run UT's football program. Having been AD, he is much more prepared than a typical WAC coach
3) He's really smart--he went to law school before he got into coaching, and you can tell how intelligent he is by listening to him speak
4) He is a great communicator. He has a vision for a program and communicates what it is and how to achieve it, not only to the team, but the fans as well. His coach's shows are almost complete oppostite of Miles'. He is extremely forth-coming and doens't beat around the bush. I actually wonder if he'll be able to continue this at a place like Tennessee
5) He is a great motivator. His '08 Tech team was probably not as good as their record indicated. They didn't have the players, but played a little bit over their heads. Same thing this year when they were absolutley depleted by injuries. They beat a more talented Hawaii team and played with Boise and LSU when they had no business doing so. You watch, whoever the new Tech coach is, will reap what Dooley has sewn in the next couple of years.
6) He has great pedigree. Besides being Vince Dooley's son and learning from him, he also was under Saban for 5 years. And apparently, that matters to people, because he, Muschamp(eventually), and Jimbo Fisher(you forgot him) will all have become head coaches of programs they don't appear to be qualified for yet.
I'm not sure Dooley will a bunch of championships at Tennessee, and I don't think this would have been a fantastic hire a month ago. But I do think he'll do well, and on January 15th, it was about the best they could have possibly done.

I am not a Saban fan, but I give the guy his props. He just went 17-1 in the SEC the last 2 years and the GOAT/Miles (in the opinion of the Baton Rouge fans) just went 8-8. Give Dooley a chance. Maybe he can beat more than 1 top 25 team in 2 years. If he does this he will do better than Les has.

Dooley will he a time coach and think he will be a good coach. I would have been happy if he com to lsu.

Muschamp is the one who said "GEORGIA IS MY DREAM JOB"..Dooley played at Virgina...I wouldn't worry about Dooley going to Georgia..

We can probably debate this year all night since they did have the lead at the half, and we played shitty. But the other game we beat them 58-10. He didn't "out coach" or "hang tough" with anybody that night.

Bottom line on Dooley is that he's the complete opposite of Kiffin in terms of style and attitude. Recruits and the fanbase will love him. I would take him over Les Miles in a heartbeat... I know that much

Others have already posted most of my thoughts and assumptions but let me answer you directly.
Your last paragraph is exactly what I was referring to
- this was a last ditch effort to get a coach (because all the other good ones were taken)
- this was bad timing and they couldn't wait to interview other ones (or for the NFL playoffs to get over)
Almost all the young/untried/untested coaches have excellent potential written all over their resumes - good communicator/brings new attitude/has good pedigree/very intelligent/.....
In his case he even had a chance at Tech and didn't set the world on fire (could have been hundreds of external factors not under his control - sanctions, existing bad players in the team, difficult schedule.... - but that is the real world) and therefore has not exactly proven his worth or shown that he can realize his potential.
There is a good chance that he could make the transition from WAC to SEC and a decent chance that he could even do well.
I was merely surprised that given the aforementioned issues , the popular opinion was "Wow - home run " instead of "meh... lets wait and see -dumbass UT"

Even in the article by Clay Travis that reviled Kiffin , they did give him his due - the recruits and the younger players loved what he was doing and they liked his style and attitude.
ETA: None of us might not like his nature / style but he sure attracts the younger players / high school recruits and that's what counts.

As a lawyer, you know that is shite logic.
But I don't think Dooley is the exact opposite of Kiffin. In fact, I think they do have some similar qualities--young, energetic, excited. Dooley is just much more professional in the way he handles his business.

kiffin's sliminess is what gave him an edge in recruiting in the SEC
