The timing of the Texas Bowl would be interesting

I know Sonny Dykes coached SMU’s bowl game when he took over, but that is an extreme outlier, and I laughed at anybody who suggested Kelly might do the same. He’s got to concentrate on recruiting and hiring a staff. Plus, a lot of guys won’t be on the team next year, so it just didn’t make any sense. I still don’t think it will happen, but when Hunt yesterday said he called around and it looked like the Texas Bowl might be the most likely, I started thinking:
1) The game is January 4th. You get, what? 12 practices to use whenever? We could backload most of those and Kelly and staff may actually have time to implement a few things, or at the very least just be an extreme CEO HC, just deciding on timeouts and what to do on 4th downs and such.
2) Early signing day is December 15th. I’m assuming there’s dead period for a couple of weeks directly after? Could be totally wrong, though.
3) Houston has always been a very important area for LSU relative to recruiting and the huge alumni base. May not be the worst idea to be a little visible there for a few days, shake some hands, talk to some folks, and end the season with him being completely entrenched as the face of the brand of LSU football.
4) The only other person besides Dykes that I can remember who ever coached his new team in their bowl game was Brian Kelly. I don’t know the particulars, but I wonder why he chose to do that. Was it to get a feel for and assess the players coming back and maybe some staff? Or was it for them to get a taste of his style and see who takes to it and buys in?
I still don’t think it happens, because this team will be so different than the one he rolls out with in September. And there’s logistically no way it would even be possible if we make the Independence Bowl, which I think is December 17th. But late the date of the Texas Bowl—maybe against Matt Campbell and Iowa State?—presents options that may have not been really considered previously.

Kelly coached the International Bowl after he moved from Central Michigan to Cincinnati. That was after the 2006 season.
Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he ended up coaching it this time.

I wouldn't mind him coaching at all if we got rid of Peetz.

Sounds right. It has happened, but not much. I just think logistically it almost never makes sense. And it still may not here. But that January 4th date is really late for a shitty bowl, so who knows. Guess we’ll find out tomorrow where we go and maybe Monday if BK plans on playing a role.

Yeah id prefer CBK focus on recruiting and building his staff.

I think you have to honor the commitment the school gave Brad Davis
And you definitely don’t want to risk starting the Brian Kelly Era with a lackluster loss in a crappy bowl

He's gonna be around the team for those practices, and will be there for the bowl as well, I'm sure but won't be weighed down by all of the time commitments.

All fair. And like I said, I don’t think it’s happening or even that it should. Just spitballing.

There is no reason for Kelly to coach a meaningless bowl game. Concentrate on staff and recruiting.

I-Bowl no longer has SEC tie-in.
CFB News projects LSU & KSU in Texas Bowl on Jan. 4.
Might try & get down for the game.

Are they not keeping score?

Did you read the the thread at all? I am not proposing BK does, this, just saying the late date of this particular game takes away some of those logistical hurdles you mentioned that he would have had to be solely concentrating on had the game been 2+ weeks earlier.

Ultimately this bowl game doesn't mean a whole lot. He can still have a lot of influence over direction during the game prep but I would think it would be to his favor with current and potential future staff if he gave a staff member the opportunity to coach the bowl game. Big career opportunity for the interim whereas it doesn't mean much to BKs career.

Chance to keep the consecutive winning season streak going

We didn't have a winning season last year. You mean consecutive non-losing season streak?
Posted on 12/4/21 at 11:00 pm to Tiger in NY
Yeah. Loss in the bowl would end the streak

He can do all these things just being around the team and that would probably actually be better , because he’s not dedicated to nothing and he can round get around and talk, recruit or whatever and still be there for the practices and The game to implement his worth ethic ,discipline and style

The NCAA rule does not set a limit on the number of practices, but sets a limit on the amount of hours available for football activities (practice, meetings & film study) to 20 hours per week with no more than 4 hours a day. 2016 USA Today Article on Bowl Prep

ESD period is Dec 15-17. Dead period from Dec 18 thru National Champ game.
