The word on the street is that they told Golding he would be interim, but Kiffin wanted him to come to BR.

So Golding countered by saying he’d only stay if they made him permanent, hence why he was only interim for about an hour before the interim tag was removed.

OM has no balls or leverage, and they know it.

Probably should’ve grabbed Matt Campbell if he was up for leaving

I think it was a knee jerk reaction to try to retain as many coaches, players and commits as possible, and to not look like Penn St

It really does feel like Arnette at MS State when the Pirate unexpectedly passed away, And that lasted one miserable season before they brought in an offensive guy; it'll be interesting to see how this plays out at the other MS school.

He won't have the NCAA punishment excuses Matt Luke had that got him to 3 years. I give him 2 years before they amicably part ways

If they were going to make a short-sighted decision just for the playoffs, the correct one was to allow Kiffin to coach. It's an amateur athletic department

I was coming on here to say this. Very similar situation.

It will probably have the same results. One or two years then gone

Maybe it's a "Can't-see-the-forest-for-the-trees" situation. (???)

If you listen to a Golding interview, he seems like a really nice guy/family man/good work ethic and has been decent at his job and has been rewarded by being hired by some of the best coaches in CFB.

That doesn't guarantee he'll be good as a boss of a whole team, but maybe the AD & board are too close to the situation, and believe their decent man/coach is ready for primetime, despite no suitors clamoring for him as HC.

They might have been better off making Charlie Weis HC.

Bama fans hated Golding but he's a very respected coach in coaching circles. He's young and even LSU tried to poach him a few times in the past due to his ties in Louisiana.

I get why people are skeptical on this but I think he's going to be much better for Ole Miss than people give credit to. He doesn't exactly have the talent level on defense at Ole Miss as one would want in SEC. Main problem I've always seen with Golding is he overthinks things and can make it too complex at times for his players. I think he's a good coach, much higher than his defensive rating suggests on a limited talent roster.

They should have let Lane and company coach. He wanted to and they told him to GTFO. The AD put them in a bad spot. Ole Miss should blame the NCAA calendar.

OM should have known Lane was leaving and had Sumrall on deck.

Look how it worked for ULL. Bad idea that will be regretted.

I don’t understand why they didn’t give him the interim and say “show us something int the playoff and the job is your’s.”

I suspect that is what they are doing. Give him a chance to prove himself in playoffs and next season.

Its hard to be too harsh on OM with that move. Considering the amount of job openings, the lack of viable candidates, and the shitty timing of the entire situation, my move would be to give him a short leash for continuity and try to find a better candidate in a year or 2.
