From very good sources: the possibility of Harbaugh leaving for the NFL is real. Could even happen fast.
NOTHING FINAL, but IF he goes, it would not be because of money, NIL, control, or just about anything regarding UM, but his growing frustration with college football itself

Harbaw to the Colts makes a lot of sense.

Hence the excuse of NIL.
But with NIL now making the college game even more like the NFL, how is that the excuse?

Although he probably doesn't have a ton of coaching years left anyway, I think this is what causes Saban to leave a year or two earlier than he otherwise may have. For the first time ever in college football the players have as much, maybe more, power/leverage than the coaches. Not only do you have to recruit a great player for 2+ years to come to your school, but you have to make sure he is paid enough to sign. Then you have to worry about your other players being jealous of the amount one of their teammates received. And BOTH guys can leverage you with the threat of a transfer. The whole system also forces coaches to have to "poach" the rosters of other coaches...even if they really don't want to take that approach.

The NFL has contracts. No team is signing a guy to a massive one year contract. If the franchise pays the player a ton of money they know he will be there at least 3-4 years because he signed a contract.
In the world of NIL + the freedom of transfer rules, player can be FA all of the time...every year...with no "salary" restrictions. As HS recruit could say: "I need $300k to sign with your school." You get it for him. He signs. Then he turns around at the end of one season and says "(Rival school) said they would pay me $500k to transfer to their team. Are you going to match it?" If you do, he can come back the next season and leverage you again.

Why in the hell would he want the Panthers job
Posted on 1/3/23 at 1:27 pm to dallastiger55
damn who is gonna lose in the first round of the playoffs every year for michigan now?

I said last year that interviewing for a job on signing day should be a fireable offense.
If he even hints at an NFL job he should be fired.

So he is pretty much going to the Broncos then?
I’ve read/heard he wants in the ballpark of potentially 20 million per season.

I’d rather him than Quinn and don’t want to give up picks for Payton

Not a fricking clue. That job is just straight trash. He would likely desire a complete overhaul, I imagine. So I guess blooming a flower from shite is what makes it enticing.

That's fine...if the fanbase is willing to accept the likely possibility of losing as a result. Harbaugh has won the last two Big 10 titles and brought them to the playoffs. There was a roughly 10 year period where Michigan was irrelevant and waded in the abyss of mediocrity. I doubt the fans are eager to potentially return to that status.
If I were a Michigan fan I would hate that my HC is essentially telling everyone he doesn't want to be here year after year. But after flirting with leaving last season, he returned and had a better year this season. Maybe the school/fanbase is tired of the annual "will he or won't he leave" conversation and tells him to leave. But it is a tough spot for the school and AD because there are no guarantees the next guy will come in an have better results.

And publicly said he wouldn’t do it again, that he was done flirting with the NFL.
AD’s are the worst business people and negotiators in the world, so I don’t expect this to happen.
Michigan is too big of a brand with too much pride and money to allow a dude like khaki pants to toy with them.
I have no issue with him going to the NFL. Just fricking go.
And interviewing on signing day is disrespectful and unprofessional. It just looks bad.
He’s overrated anyway. They almost fired him two years ago.
This year they went 2-1 in big games. I think Ohio State would beat them 8-10 times this season.

I agree that if he's interested in the NFL again, then he just needs to go, but it's ridiculous to suggest he's overrated now. He has proven to be an excellent coach everywhere he has been.
