Sources: Baylor is targeting BYU OC Jeff Grimes as the new offensive coordinator, and a deal is expected to be finalized today. Grimes was a finalist for the Broyles Award this year, as BYU finished No. 3 in scoring offense with 43.5 ppg.

I figured he'd hire Matt Canada and his vaunted collection of speed sweeps.

That’s a solid hire for Baylor. However, Dave might be disappointed if he puts Grimes in charge of the O Line. Grimes recruits well, but he’s worse with development than Cregg, and he’s uneven at best in that department.

I’ll be interested to see what he can do when he doesn’t have a guy like Zach Wilson at QB. Wilson made that offense go.

This would be my big worry.

But it does appear they developed Wilson well over several years, so that could be part of the attraction.

Wilson was just a 3 star when recruited.

People have criticized O for only hiring people he’s familiar with, but Aranda seems to be doing the same thing.

I get that. I just wondered if Grimes coming in there might indicate a change coming since that’s his position group.

I was hiring either unproven people he is connected to or people that have been mediocre to bad. There is a difference between that and hiring a guy in Grimes that has improved BYU’s O tremendously and developed a QB with his staff.

I guess people are not aware that grimes is a very hot OC right now and has steadily improved year after year at BYU. Awesome hire by Dave, on paper atleast.

Grimes was actually just the "OC" at BYU. They had an OL coach there with him as well. Kinda a weird configuration, but I'm' pretty sure he was just calling plays.

Yeah, this is a great move by Dave. One I didn’t think Baylor would pony up for (Im assuming Grimes had a few offers to choose from). I think Dave is gonna always be able to attract good assistants as long as he has the resources, because his demeanor is one that guys will want to work for. I bet he fosters a great coaching culture where guys want to not only work for him, but also with each other.

And you know he had to learn a lot about recruiting from Orgeron—he doesn’t have O’s personality, obviously—like the logistics, organization, how to build a board, delegate, etc...And with as organized as he is, he’ll likely improve on what he learned and have a more efficient system.

The key to his success, though, is gonna be if he’s a closer or not. He’s got to hire assistants who are great recruiters too, but at the end of the day, Dave is gonna have to be able to sell his program and close the deal for some in-state game changers who’d normally go to UT, OU, A&M, LSU, Bama, etc...Cause even though Baylor has a beautiful campus and it’s halfway between Dallas and Austin, Waco is a boring shite hole. Does Dave have the charisma to close? I sure hope so, cause I love him and want to see him be as successful as possible as long as it’s not directly hurting LSU.
