The Everett Withers era was not very successful and he was released last week.

quote:

Withers was dismissed the day after Texas State lost to Troy to fall to 3-8 on the season and 7-28 since arriving in 2016. The 55-year-old former James Madison head coach and longtime FBS assistant didn't win more than three games in a season and won just two Sun Belt games.

DAVID BEATY
Current Position: (Outgoing) Head Coach - Kansas

David Beaty failed to win many games at Kansas but earned a lot of respect for taking one of the toughest jobs in the FBS and not complaining about an impossible scholarship situation.

He spent 18 of the first 21 years of his coaching career in Texas and has loads of high school and JUCO relationships in the state. If interested in remaining a head coach, might he consider a Sun Belt program?

K.C. KEELER
Current Position: Head Coach - Sam Houston State

K.C. Keeler had never coached south of Delaware when he made the move from Blue Hens' head coach to Sam Houston State in 2014. After 46 wins and four playoff appearances in his first four seasons with the Bearkats, they stumbled to a 6-5 record this year and missed the playoffs.

GRAHAM HARRELL
Current Position: Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach - North Texas

Seth Littrell deserves every piece of credit for turning around a downtrodden North Texas program, but his offensive coordinator, Graham Harrell, deserves praise, too.

The 33-year-old former Texas Tech quarterback started his coaching career under Mike Leach at Washington State (2014-15) before joining Littrell's staff in 2016. He's done a brilliant job with quarterback Mason Fine and if he doesn't follow Littrell to the next school, a head-coaching job could be an option.

RHETT LASHLEE
Current Position: Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach - SMU

In 2013, as Auburn's 30-year-old offensive coordinator, Rhett Lashlee was a finalist for the Broyles Award and his stock was skyrocketing. Widely considered one of college football's next coaching stars, he remained Auburn through the 2016 season before taking the same position at UConn, a move he said wasn't about money. A year later, he left for SMU and has done an admirable job as the Mustangs rebuild following Chad Morris' departure.

For what it's worth, in December 2014, when reportedly a candidate for Tulsa head coach, Lashlee said he wasn't looking at head-coaching jobs.

the last two hires have been old farts that didnt turn around anything. i think they have to go with some young OC. sure if he has a decent run he will leave for a bigger program in a few years. but this team needs a bowl game or some thing

I wouldn't mind hiring Longo or Cumbie. Hell, maybe even baby Briles.

quote:

Newy Scruggs: TCU's Sonny Combie will be a head coach if Shawn Robinson becomes a star. Gary Patterson has produced successful assistants. David Bailff won the 2013 Conference USA title when he was at Rice. Justin Fuente went from Memphis to Virginia Tech. He was the 2016 ACC Coach of the Year. Doug Meacham had job offers but declined to pull the trigger. He stayed at TCU and lost his playcalling duties to Cumbie and left for Kansas. Cumbie is a darn good recruiter and his work with quarterbacks will make him in-demand as a head coach if Robinson becomes a star.

Adam Grosbard: The name that jumps to mind is TCU OC Sonny Cumbie. If him turning down the UT OC job a couple of years ago proves anything, it's that Cumbie will be selective with whatever job he decides to take next. But if Kliff Kingsbury is let go after this season, you'd have to imagine that Cumbie will be a strong candidate as a former Red Raider himself.

Matt Mosley: I guess I'd go with TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie. If the Frogs have a big season with new QB Shawn Robinson, Cumbie could get some looks. He's already turned down the Horns for their OC job, which turned out to be a smart move.

This program needs someone to get the fanbase excited for once. The Everett withers hire was as boring as a hire could be.

Withers should have never gotten the job to begin with. Coached two years at FCS level.

Dont laugh at this, but seriously if i were the AD, why not give Mack Brown a call?

He lives 30 minutes away and said hes waiting for the right situation. Get him in there and he can build the brand for the next couple of years and hire some young coordinators.

Hes a hell of a recruiter and we know he knows the area.

I think this is a much different situation than Fran, hes a much better coach and known for turning around programs, and wont hire his sons to take over for him who dont know shite.

I saw this on bobcatfans I believe.

Withers left Ohio state and OSU wins a natty the next year
Withers leaves james madison and JMU wins the natty the next year
I'll be happy with a natty, but a conference championship will be good enough too.

I think Graham Harrell would be a good pick.

I would think Mark Hudspeth is an option as well.
