@BFeldmanCBS Chris Petersen's name ALWAYS gets tossed out. Heard from a source close to him 2 jobs that'd tempt him: Oregon & Cal.

Interesting...

If Kelly went to the NFL, I could see Petersen as a candidate. I don't know how long Petersen would want to sit around and wait for a job to come open though if the other one he's said he wants is open.

Cal would be crazy not to take him.

Chris Petersen is a NorCal guy and also coached at Oregon for 5 years so it makes sense.

A little background information: Petersen is a Norcal guy who has a bachelor's and master's degree from UC Davis. If I were Sandy I would already be in Boise saying "The University of California is calling you home!" New facilities, California recruiting, quiet suburban living less than 10 miles away. I'm guessing Petersen is tired of the BCS BS. And first they are moving to the Big East, now they want back into the MWC with the new playoff/bowl structure. He's gotta be tired of this shite.

C'mon Chris, come home!

McIntyre is a better fit than Petersen right now. I don't see Petersen leaving his gig, unless they pony up Saban/Stoops money. McIntyre is local a winner and been in NFL.

Last year when he said it wasn't a fit at UCLA, but that fit would be a deciding factor when he entertained jobs in the future, I sort of wondered if a school like Cal would be. Oregon is an obvious choice, but people pick places for all sorts of reasons besides money. I can absolutely see why he would pick Cal.

Tedford would be a quality hire for Kentucky or Tennessee. He's still young and can coach/recruit.

that would be a home run hire for Cal and hopefully they can somehow pull it off. I have always said that Cal is a sleeping giant, with the right coach you guys can contend for Pac 12 titles on a yearly basis.

This move was a long time coming. Hope Tedford does well at his next stop and hope Cal starts fielding some good football teams again. I feel like they have been searching for a quality QB ever since Aaron Rodgers left.

I think the SJSU coach would be a good pick up. They have been killing it this year and recently.

A school that cares nothing about football is now going to buy out and fire its semi-successful football coach?

Two responses to that:

1. For six of Tedford's first 10 years (the middle years), Cal has been top 30 in FBS attendance

2. Cal just spent $321 million (a fraction of which actually exists ) on stadium improvements and new training facilities. This is the driving force now. Cal is paying for it with ESP (endowment seating program) where you pay a lot of money to sit on the 50 yard line and enjoy one of three fancy new clubs.

I'm sure some people will take this the wrong way but should a program like Cal really be spending hundreds of millions of dollars on stadium improvements or tens of millions of dollars for the football coaches?

Certainly there are major programs for whom I think it makes a lot of sense (USC, Oregon, tOSU, Michigan, Nebraska, PSU, FSU, Va Tech, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, UGA...) but should the programs that are not bringing in elite money really try to spend as if they are?

My knee jerk answer would be no - no matter how much money the Missouri, Oregon State, Arizona, Iowa, or Georgia Tech kind of programs spend on football they will not likely become elite football programs (earn a real return on their investments).

Isn't there a real virtue in recognizing what kind of athletic program you want to be and being content with being good but not elite?
