Question....Who does this describe?
During his time in the college ranks – including coaching stops at the University of Miami and Southern California – he has developed the skills of a long list of highly-regarded defensive linemen. At Miami from 1988-92, he coached eight All-Americans, including NFL first-round picks Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland and Warren Sapp. During his tenure with the Hurricanes, Miami won the national championship in 1989 and 1991 and appeared in five New Year’s Day bowl games.
He joined the USC staff as defensive line coach in 1998, was given the added responsibility of recruiting coordinator in 2001 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2003. While with Southern California, the Trojans won national championships in 2003 and 2004. He coached one of the nation’s premier defensive lines, including DE Kenechi Udeze – an All-American and first-round choice by the Minnesota Vikings in 2004 – and all Pac-10 selections Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson. In 2005, Patterson was a No. 1 pick by Philadelphia and Cody a second-round selection by Detroit.
He is also from Galliano, LA.

We messed up this year with inexperienced DCs (at least legit D1 experience)...we can't afford to be guessing with the next one. If we mess up again it could take us a couple of years to recover if it goes wrong. Orgeron is a great DL coach and recruiter, no doubt...but he has never been a sole DC and I don't want LSU to risk being the first to hire him in that capacity.
Suck it up and hire a proven guy and be done with it.

Greg Mattison (LBer Coach with the Ravens) Former co-defensive coordinator at UF left to coach LBers for the Baltimore Ravens. Has coached at Navy & aTm and has been a DC at Michigan, UF and Notre Dame.
Mattison was co-defensive coordinator and defensive lines coach for the Florida Gators football team for three years, including the 2006 BCS National Championship team. The job with the Ravens is Mattison's first NFL coaching position in 37 years of coaching football.
Those names (except Navy) are familiar with recruiting against LSU lately. He would be used to recruiting Texas, Florida, and the Northeast. Plus, I would think that being given the full reigns of a college D is a step up from being an NFL position coach.
Only downside, while a major one, is his age. He just turned 59 on Nov. 15th.

Me too. I think we need a little more abrasive and a little less diplomacy.

I have read this topic and there are some I agree with and some i don't. I think we all can agree there has to be a change on defense. If you look at the best defenses the DC is always on the sideline leading the intensity of the players. If you look at our players, sure they are fired up when they make a great play, but do you see a coach waiting to congratulate them on the sidelines or to chew their arse when they play poorly. I have watched many years of LSU football and I can tell you right now If Les Miles does not make a change and hire a DC coordinator we are in a trouble. I see people on here gripe about JL and all he has done wrong and I agree he has made more than his share of mistakes. But when you kick off to a team and they drive right down the field with ease without JL stepping foot on the ground the defense is responsible. Come on guys we got down to Troy 31 to 3. It wasn't all JL's fault. I applaud the team for coming back but it shouldn't come to that. A head coach is like a CEO of a company. He hires the right people to do the job. If the people he hires doesn't work out then they part ways and find someone else. If he keeps giving them a chance and they don't improve then the whole company is in jeopardy. A good leader recognizes his mistakes and corrects them. All is not lost with this season. We still have good talent returning and even good talent coming in next year. I am not saying to fire peveto or mallory, they were on the staff with pelini, but to get someone to run the defense and let him run it. I coach should lead the team the whole team and hire the right guy that is a specialist in the his area of expertise. We are LSU we should have no problem in hiring a top notch DC. But when Coach Miles makes that decision he has to let the guy he hires and believes in run the defense his way not Les Miles way. If you Coach Miles can't let him run the defense and trust him he shouldn't hire him. There is and old saying that defense wins championships. I have to agree. Look back at our defense over that past four years prior to this one and look at our record. College football has changed. You have to have a defense to compete in this day and age. The clock not stopping limits the number of times your offense touches the ball per game. So your defense has to stop the other team's offense. I guess I keep repeating what you all already know, but changes on the defense side have to be made. Look at these stats if you have a doubt about our defense. These are SEC rankings:
2008 SEC defensive stats
Last in red zone defense (95 percent)
Last in interceptions with four
No. 11 in scoring defense (26 ppg)
No. 10 in pass defense (206 ypg)
No. 10 in pass efficiency defense (123.4, 8 TDs)
No. 9 in total defense (316 ypg)
No. 9 in turnover margin (minus-5)
Oh yeah these stats were before the Tulane game so you can add Alabama and Ole Miss so I believe it is worse now.
CHANGE MUST BE MADE !!!

Mike DuBose - At least you could count on the defense knowing how to tackle.

BelowPar:
Is any thought being given to hiring a guy who's on an outgoing staff, so that the new DC could be hired in time for bowl practices and start installing the new defense then?
If so, Both Paul Rhodes at Auburn, and Vic Koennig at Clemson, are well thought-of and would fit the bill of being available immediately.

I came across this writeup and found it to be pretty interesting:
Wouldn't hurt to add him to the list.
Justin Wilcox (Boise State): The Boise State defense has been dominant at times this season. “The guys at Boise attack and tackle extremely well, they’re well coached,” an opposing coach told FootballScoop. What is really impressive is that Wilcox’s defense shutout Hal Mumme’s offense at New Mexico State and allowed a combined 10 points to Larry Fedora’s offense at Southern Miss and Frank Scelfo’s offense at LA Tech. Those are three very bright offensive minds.
Key Stats:
2nd nationally - Scoring defense (10.33)
9th nationally - Sacks (3.0 per game)
10th nationally - Total defense (308 yards per game)
15th nationally - Rushing defense (103 yards per game)
Wouldn't hurt to add him to the list.
