Speculation on the UT job.

2 names I keep hearing are Spurrier and Butch Davis.
Spurrier is not in play, IMHO, because I think he is close to retiring and just wants the expectation-free environment he is currently in. The only reason he is mentioned is because he is a native Tennessean and has expressed interest in the past.
Butch Davis is the biggest name in the realm of reality. Word has it that his agent has had cursory contact with UT. That is really all I know about Davis.
Skip Holtz and Greg Schiano are 2 guys that are in need of a shot at a big school. I have no word on whether any contact has occured there.
Make no mistake, whoever walks into the UT job will be in good shape on day one. They have as much talent as anyone, and a few future NFL'ers (Berry, Gerald Jones, Morley, McCoy). The only thing this team lacks is discipline. I feel that they haven't played a more talented team yet this year. They just need a better captain to right the ship.

I thought Spurrier as well. I doubt He would do it, but I think it would be worth a shot if I were in the inner circle at UT. Davis would be the solid choice.

To much competition in the SEC. In the ACC he competes against much less talent on the field and in the coaching boxes.

Thank you for making my point. Mack Brown's last two seasons at UNC he went 10-2 and 10-1. He left UNC for one of the three(probably 2nd) best job in college football.

UTenn has as much tradition, money, and support as any University in the nation. UNC is a stair step position. I think Davis would be on a plane tomorrow if he is offered in the 3 mill neighborhood.

Yep, but they don't have a great built in recruiting base which is why they have to go national.

6-8 years ago yeah it was a premier program. In today's SEC arms race competing with Saban, Meyer, Richt, etc it's not a top job anymore, IMO.
Still good, just not what it used to be.

Agree with this. They are in a similar situation that we were in. We had to pony up to get ourselves out of it and Tennessee will have to do the same. If they don't they will be getting a lesser proven coach and could possibly go the route we were in the late 90's until a couple of years ago. Here's drinking to that.

The difference though is Alabama has a much better built in recruiting base, plus is closer to other talent rich areas- Florida panhandle, Mississippi, North LA.

Perhaps. His agent is Sexton. So is Fulmer's, Spurrier's and Bill Muschamp's, and a few others.

recruiting to UT is hard
recruiting to UT has been hard since USC and UGA came back in the late 90s/early 00s
talent is a problem at UT now accordingly

not only that, but they used to take some top notch talent from Louisiana, California, Alabama, and Florida; it could still be a very good job but it will take alot of work, their talent level is a shadow of what it used to be overall

I see UT going for an offense first coach as that has been their problem in recent years. Names not mentioned that could be in play --- Nutt (unlikely, not imporssible), Sarkasian, Brewster (UMinn coach), Petersen (Boise) and Pinkel (I doubt he is at Missouri after this year).

It damn near tore his heart out to leave UNC and all of his players there. So much so that he almost had a change of heart the day before the announcement. The only reason he did leave was because it was Texas. A lesser program comes calling and he stays at UNC. Guaranteed.
