re: Speculation on the UT job.

What about Mike Leach???

So what do you guys honestly think? Here's the way I believe the situation breaks down for the UT gig:
Positives:
1) University has resources and facilities to compete.

Negatives:
1) Unrealistic fan base that chased their coach of 17 years away 1 year removed from getting to a SEC championship game that nobody thought they would get to. For christ sakes they aren't even selling out anymore.
2) Have to pull in a lot of out of state talent to compete.
3) Have to be in a the same division with Florida and Georgia and will likely be 3rd most years.
4) Competing for 3rd in the division year in and year out with South Carolina and Steve Spurrier, one of the games greatest coaches.
5) Have to play Alabama every year which is on the rise. Likely to lose 2 games a year between Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
6) Need to schedule strong OOC opponent every year to get recruits.

Now, let's compare that to Clemson:
1) Roughly equal on facilities
2) Weaker conference. Only real great coach is Butch Davis with bowden on the decline.
3) Have a good chance to win every game on the schedule.

Or to Washington:
1) Facilities not as good, but in a beautiful campus in Seattle - no true talented program in the conference except for USC and could easily start to build a better recruiting base.
2) Weak competition in a BCS conference. Only real challenge every year is USC.

Or to Syracuse:
1) Not bad recruiting base, all the good recruits from NY state are going to the likes of Wisconsin (PJ Hill), Michigan, USC (Vidal Hazelton), Penn State, and Notre Dame.
2) Awful stadium
3) Good chance to win every game with a good recruiting class.

I don't know why anyone in their right mind would go to UT right now. At the very best you are can go 11-2, and that isn't even good enough for the fan base.

if you can go 11-2, you can go 11-1. And Tennesee is the only undefeated BCS champion in SEC history. That is a very, very good job. A top 10 job. But with the current state of the SEC, it will certainly be tougher than it was 10 years ago.

when they were truly a national program who routinely plucked kids away from Cali and other recruiting areas that are now more locked up. they have talent, but not that elite talent

UT used to be siiiiick in talent. multiple 1st day picks (including usually multiple 1st round guys) year after year

we don't disagree. The job is not as great as it was 10 years ago. But it's still very good relatively. I do think they probably need a young, energetic, charasmatic guy who can recruit nationally.
