Some of their fans are throwing a fit on twitter. I guess they want an up and comer like Todd Orlando or Jeff Traylor but Dykes seems like he'd do well at SMU. Even if he jets after a few good years it's not like the same wouldn't happen if they hired the other guys so I'm not sure why their fans are upset.

Yesterday, sources shared with FootballScoop that SMU is planning to make former Cal and Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes their new head coach.

Dykes spent last season on Gary Patterson’s staff at TCU, serving in an offensive analyst role. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Cal and Louisiana Tech, where he went 41-45 with the two programs over seven seasons, three with the Bulldogs (22-15) and four with Cal (19-30).

In an ironic twist, Dykes will be coaching against his first head coaching job in the Frisco Bowl. SMU will face Louisiana Tech, where Dykes worked for three seasons and won a WAC title in 2011.

Traylor spent one season at SMU as the running backs coach and associate head coach. He was elevated to interim head coach when Morris left for Arkansas last week and was a candidate for the full-time job at SMU before the school reached its deal with Dykes.

Haven't thought of him in a while. He get fired at Cal? Either way, he's about as good as SMU could hope. They have no business turning their nose up at him.

They have no business turning their nose up at anyone.

They could do worse than Sonny Dykes. He’s certainly more accomplished than Jeff Traylor.

If they get him on the cheap, it’s a great hire. Let him used the saved money to upgrade staff.

Seems like a good get for them but guy has always creeped me out. Was an “analyst” at TCU this year so maybe that’ll help win a skillet

That's a pretty terrible hire. Get a guy that wants a stepping stone, not a re-tread.

They got one of the top coordinators in the country last time. This time they went cheaper with little "he won't leave" thrown in.
It's the follow-up after a good coach leaves that effs some programs....one that TCU mastered at the time, but few do.

I hope SMU likes leading the nation in offense and being dead last in defense

Apparently Dykes is going to coach SMU's bowl game.

In 9 days.

That's wild. When's the last time that happened?

Not sure but IMO this makes Jeff Traylor look pretty bad.

I’ve seen it done a time or two. It’s actually smart. Meaningless game so hey why not get a head start installing your offense before spring ball
