This is all from a post last year, so timeline is off by a year:

Sterlin Gilbert must be highly thought of in coaching circles...

Phillip Montgomery, long time OC for Art Briles, left Baylor two years ago to be head coach at Tulsa. He hired Gilbert away from Bowling Green to be his OC at Tulsa. Glibert had been a first year OC under Dino Babers at BG.

Fast forward to last year, when Charlie Strong needed a new OC. It can be debated whether Gilbert was Strong's first choice or second (the other candidate being TCU co-OC Sonny Cumbie)...you can read a little about UT's coaching search here, which contains good info on Gilbert and Cumbie):

LINK

Anyhow, Gilbert got the job and Texas ended up with the 19th best offense in the country this season with a true freshman QB and a 2,000 yard running back.

From the link above:
quote:

Gilbert is from the Art Briles coaching tree from his brief time in Houston with Briles and his current time with Tulsa head coach and former Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery.

quote:

Gilbert most notably developed Jimmy Garoppolo, who is much more of a pocket-passer.

From a UT buddy:
quote:

He will only get better. He had on and off play calling days and his offense is very qb dependent. His ideal guy is a throw first that can run some. He also is big on having 1 wr who is a speed first guy that can stretch the field vertically every play. FYI the oline coach and him are attached at the hip

He is from Texas and played QB at San Angelo St...here is his wiki page:

Coaching career
2003 Springtown (TX) HS (RB)
2004 Springtown (TX) HS (QB)
2005 Houston (GA)
2006–2007 Cooper (TX) HS (OC/QB)
2008–2010 Lake View (TX) HS
2011 Temple (TX) HS (OC/QB)
2012–2013 Eastern Illinois (OC/QB)
2014 Bowling Green (OC/QB)
2015 Tulsa (OC/QB)
2016–present Texas (OC/QB)

He has moved around a lot lately and is probably looking for some stability...

Better than baby Briles imo without the baggage. This is why all those Briles threads were so idiotic.

I'm really hoping this works out. I researched him a good bit last year when someone brought him up in the offensive coordinator search and was hoping they would give him a look before we they hired Canada. Guy has proven that he can attack defenses and be balanced in the run and pass. I watched a few of their games this year at South Florida and he calls some really good games. Spreads the field out and gets the ball to the play makers. That's something LSU has needed for a while. I'm tired of looking at tight sets and watching them beat their head against the wall.

As am I. He has a better resume than Briles without the baggage. This would be the homerun hire—Briles would have been much riskier.

He loves quarterbacks with quick releases. Brennan is perfect for his system. He's also will verse in using 2 qb systems. He used the 18 wheeler package at Texas will good success. He loves to go fast, throw deep, and score a ton of points.

My guess is we don’t get him w/o his OL/RB coach. Would make sense to make him RB coach, have him work with new OL coach, move Tommy Rob to WR, and maybe send Mickey Joseph walking.

I know they were at UT and are at USF together.

Gonna have to get over that relationship, Gilbert

Gotta disagree! Let your OC bring 1 guy with him and shed some of your baggage you already got doing nothing.

Almost my exact post from another thread. It makes the most sense. Robinson coached WRs in the NFL (Dallas 98-00')and at Ga Tech and TCU. He also was the passing game coordinator at USC for a while.

Its not about agreeing or disagreeing. LSU made an offensive line coach last month. There’s not an opening.
