I laugh at people that think Kirby Smart does anything major but recruit at Bama. Saban is the DC, pure and simple. He might help with LB's as a position coach, but Saban draws up the schemes, calls the shots, and makes the personnel decisions.

exactly, what about that was supposed to be so enticing? couple that with how he left georgia in the cold when he led us along and then dumped us last minute for our DC search there was a 0% chance he'd ever be our HC. people put too much into someone playing somewhere IMO and i think Kirby will be hired eventually but that it won't be that big a school and he won't be that great a coach

Say what you will about his presence as a DC, or as ILBs coach, but his recruiting can't be overlooked.

I think he'll make a good coach, but would be better to see him take a lower tier / non BCS job.

Well I certainly included it.

You basically repeated what I said.

Smart is in on the gameplanning of every game. He calls the plays in game (except in those instances where Saban wants to, but that's no different than a HC w/ offensive background calling a play). He helps identify recruits for their system through evaluations. He recruits like a champ..just ask the state of Georgia. He is a good position coach who has coached positions at two levels of the defense.

People find it convenient to overlook Kirby and attribute everything to Saban, but that's short sighted. Kirby is valuable. He'll likely get a job the level of an Ole Miss (obviously not that job, but at that level) or a Wake Forrest or NC St and do well. He isn't ready for a jump to something like Florida, but neither was Muschamp.
